The nose is the most exposed part of the face in sparring: it sits forward, it has no muscle in front of it, and a straight shot through the guard reaches it first. That is what the face bar is for. It is a padded bar set across the face opening, in front of the nose, intercepting the shot before the bridge. It does not make you invulnerable, but it turns a direct hit on the nose into a hit absorbed by foam.
Who a face bar headguard is actually for
This is not everyday headgear, it is a tool for a period. Three cases where it earns its place:
- Coming back from a broken nose. A bridge that has just knitted will not take a second impact. The bar lets you return to sparring without starting over.
- Fight camp. In the weeks before a bout you take volume, and a cut or a broken nose ten days out is not an option.
- Sparring with a markedly heavier partner, or with a hitter who does not yet control his power.
Outside those situations, open face headgear teaches more: see the range comparison further down.
What the bar changes, both ways
What it gives: it closes the central axis of the face and blocks the straights and jabs travelling up towards the nose. It also indirectly protects the upper lip and the brow ridge, two cut-prone areas.
What it costs: a horizontal bar in the lower field of vision. You adapt in two or three sessions, but at first it interferes with reading your partner's footwork, which matters more than people expect in managing distance. It also lets an uppercut from below through, travelling up under the bar.
It is a trade-off to make knowingly: you exchange part of your vision for part of your protection. Experienced boxers often alternate — bar during heavy periods, open face for technical work.
Leather, suede and triple density
The shell uses the same build as the rest of the premium range: real leather outside, which moulds to the head over the weeks and stops moving, a suede lining inside, whose velvet surface limits slipping and stays soft even soaked, and triple density foam, whose firm outer layer spreads the impact surface while the inner layers dissipate the remaining energy. That construction and the care of the leather are covered in detail on the full face leather headgear page.
Choosing your size
Headgear should be fitted, not loose, and that counts double here: if the headguard rotates, the bar shifts in front of an eye. Measure your head circumference with a tape, around 2 cm / 0.8 in above the eyebrows, and if you are unsure take the smaller size. The size ranges sit in the size guide for the range, which applies to every Esprit Boxe headguard.
Try it on with your gloves before the first session: check that the bar is centred in front of the nose rather than resting on it, and that it does not rise into your line of sight when you tuck your chin into the guard.

Worth knowing: this headgear sharply reduces cuts, bruising and the risk of a nasal fracture, but it does not remove the risk of concussion, and no headgear does. Two limits specific to the bar: it does not protect against uppercuts, which travel up under it, and it narrows the lower field of vision. Amateur competition rules generally require approved open face headgear: check with your federation before counting on this model in competition. It is training headgear.

Frequently asked questions
Does a face bar really prevent a broken nose?
It sharply reduces the risk on straight shots, which are the most frequent cause: the padded bar intercepts the fist before the bridge and spreads the impact. It is not an absolute guarantee, particularly against an uppercut travelling up under the bar or a head clash. It remains the best available compromise for returning to sparring after a healed fracture.
Does the bar get in the way of your vision?
Yes, in the lower field. Adapting takes two or three sessions, after which the brain ignores the bar the way it ignores a spectacle frame. What remains is mostly about reading your partner's footwork, and therefore managing distance. That is the price of protecting the nose.
Can it be used in competition?
It is training headgear first. Amateur competition rules generally require approved open face headgear, with no bar or grille. Requirements vary by federation and discipline: check your commission's rules before counting on this model for a show or a championship.
Bar, visor or grille: what is the difference?
The padded bar closes the nasal axis while taking only a band out of the lower field: it is the most used format in boxing and kickboxing. A metal grille closes the whole face opening and covers the mouth as well, which makes it the choice after a dental injury — see the headgear with a face grille. A clear visor keeps a panoramic view.
How do I know whether I need a bar?
Three signals: you have already broken or cracked your nose, you are entering a period of intensive sparring before a bout, or you regularly work with a markedly heavier partner. If none of the three applies, open face headgear will develop you further, because it makes you slip rather than rely on the protection.
Is it suitable for kickboxing and muay thai?
Yes, and that is where the bar finds its best use: in kickboxing the face also takes knees and long straights, two shots that leave the nose particularly exposed. Take care in clinch work, where a bar can catch; in MMA and grappling it should not be used.
