Vertical lettering reads while you move
A marking laid horizontally across a thigh disappears the moment the leg moves: it creases, foreshortens and becomes unreadable at walking pace. These joggers carry the lion emblem at the top of the thigh and the LONSDALE LONDON lettering vertically.
Vertical lettering solves that. It follows the axis of the leg, and so the axis of the movement, staying readable moving or standing still. That is why it appears on athletes' warm-up kit rather than on town trousers.
The brand takes its name from the Lonsdale Belt. The full story is on the Lonsdale zip jacket page.
What is printed on the joggers
At the top of the thigh: the lion emblem, foreleg raised, above LONSDALE in small capitals and LONDON on a band.
Lower down, the same lettering repeated very large, vertically, over the full height of the thigh. Single-colour marking, set against the ground.
Cut, fabric and finish
Elasticated waist with drawcord, side pockets, cuffed ankle. Straight cut, lightly tapered, in a knit of around 400 g/m² / 11.8 oz per sq yd.
Why the ankle is cuffed
Straight trousers that fall over the shoe get in the way of lateral movement and catch on ring ropes or on the base of a free-standing bag. That is why tracksuit bottoms in combat sports are almost all cuffed at the ankle.
The cuff clears the foot completely and leaves the stance visible — which matters when a coach is correcting a plant or a pivot.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the lettering vertical?
Because a marking laid horizontally across a thigh creases and foreshortens the moment the leg moves, and becomes unreadable at walking pace. Vertical lettering follows the axis of the leg, and so the axis of the movement.
Is there a matching top?
Yes, the Lonsdale set pairs these joggers with a hooded sweatshirt, in men's and women's cuts.
Which size should I take?
Six sizes, S to XXXL. European cut — take your usual size. The waist is elasticated with a drawcord, which covers a range of builds.
Why is the ankle cuffed?
Because straight trousers falling over the shoe get in the way of lateral movement and catch on ring ropes or the base of a free-standing bag. The cuff also leaves the stance visible.
How do you look after it?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F, inside out, no tumble dryer, and no iron directly on the print. Washing inside out is what protects the marking: it is the friction against the drum that dulls a print, more than the water.
