The name this lion carries comes from a belt
The Lonsdale Belt is the oldest trophy in British professional boxing. Hugh Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale and first president of the National Sporting Club, put it up in 1909: one belt per weight class, awarded to the champion of Great Britain. The first to win it was the Welshman Freddie Welsh, on 8 November 1909, at lightweight.
The same Earl had organised, in 1891, the first boxing bout fought with gloves. His belt, in gold, was mounted on a red, white and blue ribbon. Since 1909, only 161 boxers have won one outright across all weights — it takes three title wins in the same division.
The brand itself came much later: in 1960, the former English boxer Bernard Hart obtained permission from the seventh Earl, James Lowther, to use the Lonsdale name on his boxing equipment. Three years later Muhammad Ali wore the brand; Mike Tyson followed in the 1980s.
Cut, fabric and finish
Ribbed stand collar, lined inside with a contrasting band that stays visible when the zip is open. Full zip, two welt side pockets, ribbed cuffs and hem. Straight cut, set-in shoulders, long sleeves.
The ribbing is not plain: it carries three stripes — orange, grey and black on the light versions, white and grey on the dark ones. It is the only graphic detail on the garment apart from the logo.
The 6 colourways
The Lonsdale lion and the word LONDON sit small on the left chest. The colour changes with the ground: black on the white, white on the sage green, the mustard yellow and the black.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the Lonsdale name come from?
From the Lonsdale Belt, the oldest trophy in British professional boxing, put up in 1909 by Hugh Lowther, fifth Earl of Lonsdale. The brand was founded in 1960 by the former boxer Bernard Hart, with the seventh Earl's permission.
How many boxers have won a Lonsdale Belt outright?
161 since 1909, across all weight classes. Winning one outright takes three title wins in the same division — which is why the number is so small over more than a century.
Are the measurements published?
Yes, the shoulder, chest, length and sleeve figures are given for each of the six sizes. That is rarer than it should be on jackets, and it is what lets you compare with a garment you already own.
What are the three stripes on the ribbing?
Orange, grey and black on the light versions, white and grey on the dark ones. Apart from the logo, it is the only graphic detail on the jacket.
Which size should I take?
Six sizes, M to 4XL. European cut — take your usual size, and check against the published measurements if you are between two.
How do you look after it?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F, inside out, no tumble dryer and no iron directly on the print. Washing inside out is what protects the marking: it is the friction against the drum that dulls a print, more than the water.
