The fight that changed his name
On 25 February 1964, at the Convention Hall in Miami Beach, Cassius Clay fought Sonny Liston as a heavy underdog. Liston did not come off his stool for the seventh round: injured in the shoulder, he quit. Clay was world heavyweight champion at 22.
The next day he announced publicly that he had joined the Nation of Islam. A few days later he dropped the name Cassius Clay for Muhammad Ali. The May 1965 rematch, the one shown on this canvas, was the first he fought under that name.
What you see
Five panels, a plain black ground across the full width. Both men are cut out and set on it: Ali standing in the centre panel, white trunks with a black trim, red gloves, right arm drawn in to his body, eyes down towards his opponent.
Liston lies across the lower half, black trunks, high laced boots with white laces, one red glove still visible at the right of the frame. The ring floor shows as a pale band beneath the two men. From 3 m / 10 ft you see two red marks and one white on black; from 1 m / 3 ft the laces and the trim separate.

How to hang a 5 panel canvas
The five panels go side by side: the image is continuous and reassembles in one piece. Put up the centrepanel first, its middle 145 cm / 57 in from the floor, then add the panels in pairs eitherside, checking the level at each pair. A paper template on the wall before drilling saves redoing the holes.
The width rule is the same as for a single canvas: the set covers about two thirds of the width ofthe furniture below it. The size chart by wall type gives the full size-to-placement table.
