Shell and instep guard in one piece
Here the shin shell runs on with no join into the instep guard: a single change of angle at ankle height, and nothing that can come apart during a round. The top of the shell is cut in an open V to clear the hollow under the knee, and a gold edging outlines the whole contour of the foot piece, sole included, with embossed patterns on the sides. The official Esprit Boxe logo and the FOR THE GLORY motto are printed in gold, set vertically.
That double job changes what you ask of protection. A shin guard for kick-based disciplines does not only have to absorb an impact taken head-on: it has to hold when you are the one going into contact, shin against shin, at full speed. Hence rigid shells rather than plain foam, and hence the importance of the shell not shifting at the moment of impact.
It is also why a shin guard protects your partner as much as yourself. In sparring it neutralises the bony edge on both sides of the exchange.
The build
Rigid, curved shin shell, matt black, running in one piece into the instep guard — there is no join between the two, only a change of angle at ankle height. The top of the shell is cut in an open V to clear the hollow under the knee.
The sides carry embossed patterns, visible in raking light. A vertical gold band runs down the upper section of the shell, and a gold edging outlines the whole contour of the foot piece, sole included.
The marking
The official Esprit Boxe logo is printed in gold and set vertically on the shell, with the FOR THE GLORY motto. It is repeated smaller on top of the foot, also in gold.
Good to know: the only visual supplied by the maker for this model is a front view. The back, the closure system and the inside of the shell are not documented in images, so we do not describe them.

The trade reference is the same on every model: a shin guard is chosen on height, not on weight. Measure the distance between the bottom of your kneecap and the top of your foot, leg straight: that is the length the shell has to cover. For a numeric chart, the sock shin guards publish theirs, from 130 cm to 185 cm / 4 ft 3 in to 6 ft 1 in.
The tip: the shell and the foot piece being one piece, the whole thing goes on in a single movement and cannot come apart during a round. In exchange the angle between shin and foot is fixed: if you want more ankle freedom, the white and gold model joins the two parts with an articulated bellows.

What is the difference with the white and gold shin guards?
The link between shell and foot. Here the two parts are one piece: quick to put on, nothing can come apart, fixed ankle angle. On the white and gold model they are joined by an articulated bellows that leaves the ankle more range.
Why do kick-based disciplines need a rigid shell?
Because the shin has two jobs there: it strikes, and it blocks. During a check you lift the knee and present the edge of the shin like a shield — shin against shin, at full speed. Plain foam absorbs an impact taken head-on; a shell holds when you are the one going into contact.
How do you choose shin guard size?
On height, not on weight — that is the difference with boxing gloves. The shell has to cover the shin from the bottom of the kneecap to the instep. Measure that distance with the leg straight and compare. Between two sizes, take the larger: a short shell leaves a bare zone that no adjustment can make up.

What are shin guards for in sparring?

How do you look after shin guards?
Wipe the outside after every session and let them air dry, never on a radiator or in a closed bag. No washing machine: water gets between the shell and the foam and makes it swell. A shin guard put away damp degrades from the inside.
