A bellows between the shell and the instep guard
The shin shell and the instep guard are two separate pieces, joined by a soft bellows. The ankle keeps its range and the foot follows the movement instead of pulling on the shell. Two wide white hook-and-loop straps close behind the calf onto black elastic panels, the top staying open so nothing presses into the back of the knee. The official Esprit Boxe logo is printed in black on the shell, with the FOR THE GLORY motto.
The periosteum is densely innervated. That is why an impact on the shin hurts far more than the same impact on a thigh, and why a bruise there takes a long time to clear: there is no muscle mass to absorb it and no abundant blood supply to drain it.
In disciplines that strike with the legs, that same edge serves as both weapon and shield. A shin guard therefore works twice: when you take a kick, and when you block one.
The build
Rigid, curved shin shell, white, edged in black, following the line of the leg. A long central reinforcement is applied down the middle, directly over the crest. The sides are pierced with gold perforations, which let the sides of the calf breathe.
The instep guard is a separate piece, joined to the shell by a soft bellows: the ankle keeps its range, and the foot follows the movement instead of pulling on the shell. It carries its own field of gold perforations on top.
At the back, two wide white hook-and-loop straps close onto black elastic panels. The top of the calf stays open, which avoids compression behind the knee.
The marking
The official Esprit Boxe logo is printed in black and set vertically on the shin shell, with the FOR THE GLORY motto. It is repeated smaller on the instep.

The trade reference is settled: a shin guard is chosen on height, not on weight as gloves are. The shell has to cover the shin from the bottom of the kneecap to the instep. Too short and it leaves the upper section bare; too long and it catches under the knee and rotates during a round. For a numeric chart, the sock shin guards publish theirs, from 130 cm to 185 cm / 4 ft 3 in to 6 ft 1 in.
The tip: measure the distance between the bottom of your kneecap and the top of your foot, leg straight. That is the length the shell has to cover. Between two sizes, take the larger: a slightly long shell is taken up by the straps, a short one leaves a bare zone that no adjustment can make up.

Do shin guards rotate around the leg?
That is the classic fault of a model that is too big or badly tightened. Here the hold rests on two wide hook-and-loop straps closing onto elastic panels, and on the instep guard blocking rotation from below. Tighten the lower strap first, then the upper one.
How do you look after shin guards?
Wipe the outside after every session and let them air dry, never on a radiator or in a closed bag. No washing machine: water gets between the shell and the foam and makes it swell. A shin guard put away damp degrades from the inside.
