The Fight of the Century, and a broken thumb
In 1964 Frazier was not meant to go to the Tokyo Games at all: he was only the reserve for Buster Mathis. Mathis was injured, Frazier went — and won Olympic gold at heavyweight, fighting the final with a broken thumb.
On 8 March 1971, at Madison Square Garden, he fought the unbeaten Muhammad Ali in front of an estimated 300 million viewers. Fifteen rounds, a left hook that put Ali down in the last, and a unanimous decision. It remains the first defeat of Ali's career.
The artwork
JOE FRAZIER in gold serif capitals, set on a horizontal band with folded ends — a classic banner ribbon.
Beneath it, SMOKIN' JOE in small spaced capitals between two rules. The print is entirely gold on black, with no portrait and no illustration. Plain back.
The garment
Ribbed crew neck, no hood and no pocket. Ribbed cuffs and hem, straight cut, set-in long sleeves. This is the shape that goes under a jacket.

Frequently asked questions
Why was Joe Frazier called Smokin' Joe?
For the way he came forward without pause, walking through punches to land the left hook. The name came from his corner and stuck for the rest of his career.
Did Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali?
Yes, on 8 March 1971 at Madison Square Garden, on a unanimous decision after fifteen rounds. It was Ali's first professional defeat. They fought twice more; Ali won both.
Was Frazier an Olympic champion?
Yes, at Tokyo 1964, as a late replacement for the injured Buster Mathis — and he won the final with a broken thumb.
Does this sweatshirt have a hood?
No. It is a crew neck, with no hood and no pocket — the shape that fits under a jacket.
What size should I take?
European cut — take your usual size, with no Asian sizing to convert. Six sizes from S to XXXL, all at the same price. Over training kit, go up one.
How do I care for the print?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F inside out, no tumble dryer, and never run an iron over the print. Heat transfer film holds for years on that routine and gives way to heat, not to washing.
