Spain boxing shorts

In short: Two columns frame the coat of arms on your right leg, wrapped in a ribbon reading PLVS VLTRA — further beyond. Those are the Pillars of Hercules, and the motto is a deliberate contradiction of what used to be written there. Three horizontal bands in red, yellow, red, Muay Thai cut. 8 sizes, XS to 4XL. €39 in XS, €44 from S to 4XL.
Two words on your leg: further beyond
The two columns flanking the shield are the Pillars of Hercules, the rocks either side of the Strait of Gibraltar. In antiquity they marked the edge of the known world: past them, nothing. The phrase attached to the place was non plus ultra, nothing further beyond.
After the crossing to the Americas, Spain struck out the negative. What is left is PLVS VLTRA: further beyond. It is the national motto, and it is coiled around those columns on your short.
For a piece of fight kit it is hard to better as a sentence. It says what training actually asks for: the extra round, the one you did not think you had. Most people will not know what is written there. You will.
What the shorts look like
Three horizontal bands: red on top, yellow through the middle on a band twice the depth of the others, red below — the exact proportions of the Spanish flag. On the yellow band, to the right, the full coat of arms: the quartered shield of Castile, León, Aragon and Navarre with the pomegranate of Granada at its base, the royal crown above, and the two columns carrying the PLVS VLTRA ribbon.
The wide elastic waistband is solid red and continues the top band. A label on the front carries the logo and the words ESPRIT BOXE — FOR THE GLORY in white. Satin finish.
The Muay Thai cut, and why it matters
Every country short in this collection shares one cut: short leg, high side split over the hip, wide elastic waistband. That is not styling. The high split clears the hip completely, which is what a head kick and a clinch need — the two movements Muay Thai is built around.
In practice these work for Muay Thai, kickboxing, K-1 and MMA training, and they are just as usable in boxing for gym work and club shows: the leg stays free and nothing catches during footwork.

Worth knowing: this is a short carrying a written motto — PLVS VLTRA, further beyond. Two words your training partners will end up asking you to translate. The dominant red also works in your favour in the red corner; check your association’s rules before a sanctioned bout.
Getting the size right
European cut — take your usual size. Most Muay Thai shorts on the market are Thai-made and sized accordingly, which is why almost every seller tells you to order one size up. These are cut to European sizing, so that correction does not apply. Eight sizes, XS to 4XL, where the bulk of the market stops at XXL. The elastic waistband absorbs a swing in waist measurement, which helps through a fight camp. If you train in a groin guard, go one size up.

Frequently asked questions
Do Muay Thai shorts run small?
Thai-made shorts do, which is why the usual advice is to order one size up. These are a European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes run from XS to 4XL. Between two sizes, or if you wear a groin guard, take the larger one.
What is the difference between Muay Thai shorts and boxing shorts?
Muay Thai shorts sit above the knee with a high side split and a wide elastic waistband, which clears the hip for kicks and clinch work. Boxing shorts run longer with the waistband above the navel, marking the low-blow line. These are the Muay Thai cut, and they carry over to boxing training without trouble.
What does PLVS VLTRA mean?
Latin for further beyond. It is the national motto of Spain, written across the ribbon around the Pillars of Hercules on the coat of arms. It reverses the older non plus ultra, nothing further beyond, which marked the limit of the known world at the Strait of Gibraltar.
What are the Pillars of Hercules?
The two rocks either side of the Strait of Gibraltar — the Rock of Gibraltar and its counterpart on the North African shore. Classical geography treated them as the western boundary of the world, which is why the Spanish coat of arms places them around the shield.
How do you wash Muay Thai shorts?
Machine wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F, no tumble dryer, and never put an iron directly on the panels. Skip the fabric softener: it coats the weave and slows how fast sweat moves through it.
Are these unisex?
Yes. The cut is the same for men and women — only the size changes, and the range opens at XS, which is not true everywhere.
