In short: On 27 April 1974, 11,000 people filled the Hallenstadion in Zurich to watch Fritz Chervet fight for the world flyweight title — nothing like it had happened to Swiss boxing before. Solid red shorts with the white cross on the right leg, on a Muay Thai cut. 8 sizes, XS to 4XL. €39 in XS, €44 from S to 4XL.
The little Mozart of the ring
Fritz Chervet, from Bern and out of a boxing family, was five times European flyweight champion. His record: 59 wins, 25 of them inside the distance. Through the seventies he made boxing one of the most watched sports in the country — for a while he was the only boxer Swiss television showed.
Twice he went for the world title against the Thai Chartchai Chionoi. First in Bangkok on 17 May 1973. Then in Zurich on 27 April 1974, over fifteen rounds in front of 11,000 people — a decision the press at ringside called a scandal.
Those close to him called him a little Mozart of the ring: hand speed, combinations, a feel for slipping a punch. Switzerland produced Blaser, Giroud and Martelli after him, and before them the Genevans Albert Badoud, Louis Clément and Maurice Dubois, European champions between the wars. A short line, but a dense one.
What the shorts look like
Solid red across the whole garment, no panels and no splits in the colour. The white cross sits on its own, low on the right leg, as a solid block — the plainest treatment in the country range and the most instantly recognisable.
The wide elastic waistband repeats the body red. A red label on the front carries the logo and the words ESPRIT BOXE — FOR THE GLORY in white. No lettering anywhere else: red and white, nothing more.
The Muay Thai cut, and why it matters
Every country short in this collection shares one cut: short leg, high side split over the hip, wide elastic waistband. That is not styling. The high split clears the hip completely, which is what a head kick and a clinch need — the two movements Muay Thai is built around.
In practice these work for Muay Thai, kickboxing, K-1 and MMA training, and they are just as usable in boxing for gym work and club shows: the leg stays free and nothing catches during footwork.

Worth knowing: this is the only country short on a plain ground. That has a practical upside: if your club puts you in the red corner, this one covers both jobs at once — you keep your flag and you meet the colour requirement. Check your association’s rules before a sanctioned bout.
Getting the size right
European cut — take your usual size. Most Muay Thai shorts on the market are Thai-made and sized accordingly, which is why almost every seller tells you to order one size up. These are cut to European sizing, so that correction does not apply. Eight sizes, XS to 4XL, where the bulk of the market stops at XXL. The elastic waistband absorbs a swing in waist measurement, which helps through a fight camp. If you train in a groin guard, go one size up.

Frequently asked questions
Do Muay Thai shorts run small?
Thai-made shorts do, which is why the usual advice is to order one size up. These are a European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes run from XS to 4XL. Between two sizes, or if you wear a groin guard, take the larger one.
What is the difference between Muay Thai shorts and boxing shorts?
Muay Thai shorts sit above the knee with a high side split and a wide elastic waistband, which clears the hip for kicks and clinch work. Boxing shorts run longer with the waistband above the navel, marking the low-blow line. These are the Muay Thai cut, and they carry over to boxing training without trouble.
Who is the best Swiss boxer of all time?
Fritz Chervet, from Bern, five-time European flyweight champion with 59 wins, who challenged twice for the world title against Chartchai Chionoi in 1973 and 1974. Before him, Albert Badoud, Louis Clément and Maurice Dubois held European titles between the wars.
Why is this short a good fit for the red corner?
The ground is solid red with no second colour, so it satisfies a red-corner requirement while still carrying the flag. Amateur rulebooks generally assign red or blue for the bout itself — confirm with your association before the card.
How do you wash Muay Thai shorts?
Machine wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F, no tumble dryer, and never put an iron directly on the panels. Skip the fabric softener: it coats the weave and slows how fast sweat moves through it.
Are these unisex?
Yes. The cut is the same for men and women — only the size changes, and the range opens at XS, which is not true everywhere.
