Champion, a word from the battlefield
The word embroidered on this belt has a rougher origin than its current use suggests. Champion comes from the late Latin campio, meaning one who fights in the arena, itself formed on campus: the field, the open ground where fighting takes place.
In the Middle Ages, a champion was someone who fought in another's place in judicial combat. A quarrel was settled by arms, and a party who could not fight — a cleric, a woman, an elderly person — named a champion to stand for them. His victory counted as the verdict.
The modern sense, the best in a discipline, only took hold with the codified competitions of the nineteenth century. In a ring the word keeps both layers: you fight alone, but you carry someone's colours.
