Boxing reflex ball: complete guide, benefits and how to choose
of reading
In short: the reflex ball is Vasyl Lomachenko's favourite training tool. In 10 minutes a day it develops hand-eye coordination, punching precision, defensive reflexes and conditioning. Beginners: start with the black ball (novice). Experienced: the green ball (boxer) or the 360 headband.
Ever since Vasyl Lomachenko made the reflex ball popular, this piece of kit has become a must for any fighter. Simple, effective, portable: you need no gym and no partner. This guide covers everything — the benefits, how to choose the right model, and how to progress quickly.
What is a boxing reflex ball?
A boxing reflex ball is a highly portable piece of training equipment. The concept is simple: an elastic cord links a rubber ball to a headband worn around your head. You strike the ball while controlling the intensity and direction of your punches. Nothing else is needed.
| Component | Role | Variants |
|---|---|---|
| The headband | Fixes to the head, adjustable | Fabric (comfort) or PVC (economical) |
| The cord | Pulls the ball back towards you | Short = fast, long = beginner |
| The ball | The target to strike | Light (novice) or heavy (experienced) |
Ball colours at Esprit Boxe: black, yellow and pink = novice (slower, easier). Red = intermediate. Green = experienced boxer.
The 10 benefits of a boxing reflex ball
Training with a reflex ball forces your brain to focus solely on the ball, chaining combinations while anticipating its return. After a few weeks you will see a clear improvement in your reactivity and in your accuracy when countering.
The flinch reflex — closing your eyes when a shot comes in — is natural but dangerous in a fight, because it weakens your defence. The reflex ball forces you to keep your eyes open and your guard up while the ball comes back at you. It is the best tool for reprogramming that reflex. Some beginners lose it within three weeks.
Holding a long series of strikes on the ball without losing balance is hard. The reflex ball naturally trains you to keep your feet properly placed while throwing effective punches. You can then add movement and slips.
The ball moves fast and unpredictably. To hit it several times in a row you have to be perfectly accurate and coordinated. That accuracy transfers directly to your bag work and to sparring. Some boxers see a significant improvement within three weeks.
The reflex ball is a complete exercise combining movement, blocks, slips and strikes. It raises the heart rate and takes you into the fat-burning zone. You can increase the intensity by shortening the cord.
This is probably the most underestimated advantage — and the most important over time. Training with a reflex ball is fun and addictive, which delivers a consistency that many other exercises cannot.
A reflex ball needs very little space — a bedroom is enough. It is the ideal complement for sessions at home or while travelling, with zero bulk in the kit bag.
Because the exercise is fun, you train for longer without noticing. The sessions add up and contribute effectively to weight management, combined with a balanced diet.
The fast pace of the ball demands total concentration. Over time you become used to staying focused on a moving target for long periods — a key quality in a fight.
By adding movement and slips during the session, you see shots coming faster than ever, which sharpens your defensive reflexes. Accessible at every level — even with no prior boxing experience.
How to choose your boxing reflex ball
| Model | Who it suits | Advantages |
|---|---|---|
| Reflex Ball, 3 levels | Every level | Colour-coded levels, ideal to start |
| Fabric headband | Beginners | Greater comfort, soft headband |
| PVC headband | Beginners / intermediate | Tough, several colour pairings |
| 360 headband ★ recommended | Every level | 360° rotation, premium headband |
| Maxi Pack, 4 balls | Clubs / gifts | Four balls to progress through the levels |
| Leather reflex ball | Experienced | Genuine leather, sand and cotton fill, 4 m cord |
Choosing advice: if you are new to the reflex ball, start with the black ball (novice, long cord) on the 360 headband. The fabric headband is more comfortable for long sessions. The Maxi Pack is ideal if you want to progress through every level.

How to use a reflex ball — the basics
1. Set the headband: adjust it so the ball sits at forehead height. It should not hang lower than your eyes.
2. Start slowly: strike the ball with the back of the knuckles. Wait for it to come back before striking again. Do not chase the ball — let it come to you.
3. Progress in stages: master the single jab first. When you can chain 20 jabs without losing rhythm, add the cross. Only then move to combinations.
4. Shorten the cord to increase the difficulty — the ball returns faster. Lengthen it to start out or to focus on technique.
Worth knowing: do not make your own reflex ball with a tennis ball. A tennis ball is too hard and can break your nose on the way back — it happens more often than people think.

Frequently asked questions — boxing reflex balls
Which reflex ball should a beginner choose?
To start, choose a black, yellow or pink ball (novice level) with a long cord. The 360 headband model offers the best balance of quality and comfort to begin with. Avoid the green balls (boxer level) first — they come back too fast for a beginner.
How long before you see results with a reflex ball?
With 10 to 15 minutes of regular training three times a week, the first results in coordination and reflexes are visible in two to three weeks. Punching accuracy and the reduction of the flinch reflex generally improve within three to four weeks.
Is a reflex ball effective with no boxing experience?
Yes, completely. A reflex ball requires no prior level. It is even an excellent entry point for building reflexes, coordination and fitness before joining a boxing club.
What is the difference between a fabric and a PVC headband?
The fabric headband is more comfortable over time and does not slip on sweat. The PVC headband is more economical and tougher. For sessions over 10 minutes, fabric is recommended. The 360 headband combines the comfort of fabric with 360-degree rotation of the cord.
Can a reflex ball be your only training?
A reflex ball is an excellent complement but not a full substitute. It develops coordination, reflexes and light conditioning, but does not replace bag work for power or sparring for distance. Fit it into your warm-up or the end of a session.
How do you make reflex ball training harder?
Three ways to progress: shorten the cord so the ball returns faster, choose a heavier ball at a higher level, or add movement and slips between strikes. The Maxi Pack with four balls of different levels is ideal for progressing gradually.
