The essentials: a leather striking ball weighing 1 kg / 2.2 lb, filled with sand and cotton, hung from a 4 m / 13 ft braided cotton cord fitted with a brass snap hook. No headband and no elastic: the ball hangs free and swings on the length of the cord. Reinforced stitching and a leather hanging loop. €59, free standard shipping.
Before forehead bands and elastics, boxers trained their reflexes on a leather ball hung from a cord. The principle has not aged, and it produces a movement no elastic ball reproduces: a free swing, with no snap back, where the path depends only on your punch.
One kilo, and everything changes
This is the figure that separates this ball from the rest of the collection. A headband reflex ball weighs 20 to 40 g / 0.7 to 1.4 oz; this one weighs 1 kg / 2.2 lb, twenty-five to fifty times more.
That weight does not make the drill "harder" in the sense of the ball coming back faster: it makes it different. Mass creates inertia. The ball does not snap back like an elastic, it travels, returns slowly and swings. You train long timing and reading a path rather than pure reaction.
The sand and cotton filling explains that behaviour: cotton gives the volume and cushions, sand brings the mass. It is the same principle as a punching bag, in miniature.
Leather and finish
Leather gives the feedback experienced practitioners look for: a firm, direct contact, close to that of a bag. The stitching is exposed and reinforced, and the hanging loop is doubled leather, where all the pull concentrates.
Built for a movement already in place. A kilo of filled leather calls for protected hands and a clean technique. To discover the drill, a 20 g / 0.7 oz foam ball on a headband builds the movement first.
Four metres of cord
The braided cotton cord is 4 m / 13 ft long, which leaves plenty of latitude for fitting: a high garage ceiling, a barn beam, a tree branch, a pull-up bar. You set the height at the knot and coil the surplus.
The brass snap hook lets you take the whole thing down in seconds, useful if the anchor point is used for something else as well.
The usual setting places the ball at chin height, fists up in guard. Higher and you punch upwards and lose your base; lower and the posture breaks.

What determines the load is the anchor point. One kilo at rest, far more in motion: every strike creates a jolt that multiplies the pull. Hang the ball from a beam, a concrete slab or a stand. A false ceiling will not do.

Frequently asked questions
How much does this leather reflex ball weigh?
1 kg / 2.2 lb, filled with sand and cotton. A headband reflex ball weighs 20 to 40 g / 0.7 to 1.4 oz, so this is twenty-five to fifty times heavier — and it swings instead of snapping back.
What is the difference with a headband reflex ball?
The movement. An elastic ball snaps back fast and trains pure reaction. A hung ball swings freely, with the path depending only on your punch: you train long timing and reading a trajectory. The two complement each other well.
Where can it be hung?
From a beam, a concrete slab, a stand or a pull-up bar — anything that already carries the load. A false ceiling will not do. The 4 m / 13 ft cord leaves room to set the height wherever you fit it.
At what height should it be set?
At chin height, fists up in guard. Higher and you punch upwards and lose your base; lower and the posture breaks. Set it at the knot and coil the surplus cord.
Why a sand and cotton filling?
Cotton gives the volume and cushions, sand brings the mass. Together they give the ball its inertia — the same principle as a punching bag, in miniature.
Does the leather need looking after?
Wipe it with a dry cloth after a session and let it air. Keep it away from a radiator and from direct sun: leather stays supple as long as it is not dried out. The reinforced stitching and the doubled loop are worth a look from time to time.
