The essentials: a reflex ball fitted with a 360° swivelling loop between the headband and the cord, which does away with erratic rebounds and twisted line. High-density foam ball, 20 g / 0.7 oz, markedly lighter and safer than a tennis ball. Elastic fabric headband, in a USA or France design. Complete set: headband, cord and ball. €19, free standard shipping.
What lets most reflex balls down comes to one detail: the cord is fixed rigidly to the headband. On every side strike the line twists, the ball comes back off line, and the run stops after a few punches. You think your reflexes are the problem when it is the kit going wrong.
The 360° swivelling loop
This model puts an articulated loop between the headband and the cord. It turns freely in every direction: the line never twists, whatever angle you punch from.
In practice, the rebound becomes readable again. The ball comes back along the line of the punch instead of spinning off, which lets you string far longer runs together and work hooks and side strikes, not just the straight punch in front of you. That is the difference between a novelty and a real training tool.
A 20 gram foam ball
Many reflex balls use a tennis ball or a solid rubber ball. This one is high-density foam and weighs only 20 g / 0.7 oz. Three consequences.
It is safer: a mistimed rebound to the face does not hurt, which counts when you are starting out and missing often. It is slower, so easier to follow with the eyes while the coordination goes in. And it can be used bare-handed, with no gloves or wraps, since the contact stays soft.
Worth knowing: a light ball is not an easy ball. It does come back more slowly, but it is also more sensitive to imprecision: an off-centre punch sends it clearly off line. That makes it an excellent read on the quality of your striking.
Setting your reflex ball
This is the step everyone rushes, and the first reason people give up. A badly set cord makes the drill unplayable.
- Place the headband on the forehead, with the attachment centred between the eyebrows.
- Adjust the tension: the band should hold without pressing, even as you move your head.
- Set the cord length so the ball reaches your wrist, arm extended and fist closed.
- Lock the length with a knot, then tuck or trim the surplus.
- Shorten it as you go over the sessions: the shorter the cord, the faster the ball comes back.

Build the movement before the speed. The foam ball is designed to be harmless on contact. Start slowly, keep the ball below eye level, and take out glasses or contact lenses if you pick up the pace.
You may also like
- Reflex ball, 3 levels — three weights from 22 to 40 g / 0.8 to 1.4 oz, if you want to pick your difficulty to the gram.

- 4-ball pack — four balls, a bag and spare cords, if you want the full progression.
All seven are gathered in the boxing reflex balls collection.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 360° loop for?
Stopping the cord twisting. On a fixed attachment the line winds up on every side strike and the ball comes back off line. The swivelling loop turns freely, so the rebound stays readable whatever angle you punch from.
How do you set the cord length?
So the ball reaches your wrist with the arm extended and the fist closed. Lock it with a knot, then shorten it session by session: the shorter the cord, the faster the return.
Is a reflex ball dangerous for the eyes?
This ball is foam and weighs only 20 g / 0.7 oz, which makes contact with the face painless. Start slowly all the same, keep the ball below eye level, and take out glasses or contact lenses as you pick up the pace.
Do you need gloves to train with it?
No. At 20 g / 0.7 oz in foam, the contact stays soft enough to work bare-handed. Wraps only become useful with a denser ball, such as a tennis ball.
How long should a session be?
Short and often. Three to five rounds of one to two minutes is more use than one long session: reflex work fades as soon as concentration drops, and quality of contact matters more than volume.
Is it suitable for MMA and muay thai?
Yes. The drill trains hand-eye coordination and head movement, which apply to any striking discipline. The swivelling loop makes it particularly suited to hooks and side angles.
