The essentials: a reflex ball on a black fabric headband, supplied with a real felt tennis ball — yellow or red — or a denser black rubber ball. The rebound is markedly sharper than with foam: this is the model for people who already have the movement. Adjustable cord. Complete set: headband, cord and ball. €15, free standard shipping.
Not all reflex balls are the same, and the difference is not the headband: it is what sits at the end of the cord. Light foam comes back slowly and gives you time to build the movement. A tennis ball comes back fast and hard: that is the rebound that trains reaction once the movement is there.
The rebound of a real tennis ball
The yellow and red versions carry a felt tennis ball, not an imitation. That changes three things.
The return is faster: mass and elasticity send the energy of the punch back instead of absorbing it. The path is more direct, and so more demanding to read as the pace rises. And the contact is firmer under the fist: you feel the punch land, which very soft foam sometimes lacks.
Felt has another advantage: it grips the air slightly and degrades very slowly, where foam eventually marks at the impact points.
Three balls, three levels of demand
| Ball | Material | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Tennis ball, felt | Sharp rebound, the classic |
| Red | Tennis ball, felt | Sharp rebound, better visibility |
| Black | Dimpled rubber | Drier, faster return |
Our advice: the red stands out from the background better than the yellow, especially indoors under artificial light. On a drill where everything depends on visual tracking, that detail counts for more than it sounds. The black rubber ball is the most demanding of the three: it does not deform on impact, so it returns all of the energy.
The fabric headband
The band is black elastic fabric, wide and soft. It follows the shape of the head with no pressure point, and the fabric absorbs sweat: that is what keeps it in place through a long session.
Setting your reflex ball
This is the step everyone rushes, and the first reason people give up. A badly set cord makes the drill unplayable.
- Place the headband on the forehead, with the attachment centred between the eyebrows.
- Adjust the tension: the band should hold without pressing, even as you move your head.
- Set the cord length so the ball reaches your wrist, arm extended and fist closed.
- Lock the length with a knot, then tuck or trim the surplus.
- Shorten it as you go over the sessions: the shorter the cord, the faster the ball comes back.

A denser ball, for a movement already in place. A tennis or rubber ball comes back more sharply than foam: that is what makes it a speed tool once coordination is there. To discover the drill, or for a child, a foam ball builds the movement faster.

Frequently asked questions
Tennis ball or foam ball, which should I choose?
Foam comes back slowly and gives time to build the movement — the one to start with. A tennis ball comes back fast and firm, which trains reaction once the coordination is there. Plenty of people own both and switch during a session.
What is the difference between the three balls?
Yellow and red are felt tennis balls with the same rebound; red simply stands out better indoors. Black is dimpled rubber: it does not deform on impact and so returns all the energy, which makes it the most demanding.
Which is the most demanding?
The black rubber ball. It does not deform on impact, so the return is drier and faster than with a felt tennis ball.
How do you set the cord length?
So the ball reaches your wrist with the arm extended and the fist closed. Lock it with a knot, then shorten it session by session: the shorter the cord, the faster the return.
Do you need gloves with a tennis ball?
Not necessarily, but wraps are worth it if you train long: contact is firmer than with foam, and it is the knuckles that take it. For bare-handed work, a foam ball is the softer option.
Does the fabric headband hold when you sweat?
Yes, that is what fabric is for here: it absorbs rather than letting the band slide. Wash it by hand and let it air dry between sessions.
