Two timekeepers, one signal
The text published in 1867 under the name of the Marquess of Queensberry does not only set three-minute rounds: it also requires two timekeepers to be appointed for each bout, and the ring to measure 24 feet, that is 7.32 m, on each side. Boxing became at that moment a sport timed by officials seated outside the ring, whose decision has to be heard over the noise.
That constraint is what the diameter of the dome answers. On a competition ring surrounded by tiered seating, between the corners shouting instructions and the crowd, the signal has to cross the distance and reach the boxer before his opponent. A 25 cm / 10 in gong carries where a table-sized model gets drowned out.
What you receive
A domed cap 25 cm / 10 in across, in metal with a matt black finish, fixed by a central bolt to a wooden plate. The Esprit Boxe mark and the For the Glory line sit across the top of the dome in gold, readable from the ring apron.
The mallet is included: a steel head, a black shaft, struck with a full hand. It stows to the right of the dome, held by two clips on a metal plate screwed into the base.
The solid wood base, 40 x 30 cm / 16 x 12 in, in a light tone, gives a dome this size the footing it needs: the whole thing does not shift under the strike and carries in two hands from one table to another.

The tip: plan the space on the timekeeping table. With a base of 40 x 30 cm / 16 x 12 in, it takes up the equivalent of an A3 sheet laid flat, mallet included. On a narrow table shared with the scorecards, the 18 cm format leaves more working surface.

Frequently asked questions
Which size of ring gong should you choose?
The diameter of the dome governs how far the sound carries. The 25 cm / 10 in is the format for shows and tiered halls, with a base of 40 x 30 cm / 16 x 12 in. The 18 cm model and its base of around 30 x 20 cm / 12 x 8 in suit a club, a training hall and a ring at home.
What is a ring gong for in boxing?
To open and close each round. The rules published in 1867 require rounds of three minutes, one minute of rest and the appointment of two timekeepers per bout. The gong is the instrument through which those officials address both boxers, the corners, the referee and the hall at the same instant.
Is the mallet included?
Yes. A mallet with a steel head and a black shaft, stowed on the base by two clips screwed into the wood, to the right of the dome. The gong works with no batteries and nothing to plug in: it is ready as soon as it is unboxed.
Where does "saved by the bell" come from?
From the ring. A boxer put on the canvas has ten seconds to rise unaided, a count set by the 1867 rules; if the end-of-round gong falls during that count, the fight continues into the next round. The phrase left boxing to describe any deadline that arrives just in time. Modern rulebooks handle that situation differently depending on the federation and on which round it happens in.
How much space does it need on the timekeeping table?
40 x 30 cm / 16 x 12 in, the footprint of an A3 sheet laid flat, mallet included since it stows on the base. Allow twice the width if you are setting a digital timer and the judges' scorecards alongside it.
How do you look after a matt black finish?
A soft dry cloth, or barely damp for dust. Matt does not hold fingerprints the way polished chrome does, but it does scratch: avoid abrasive products and do not set anything metal on the dome. The gold marking is treated the same way, without rubbing.
