Lettering MMA shorts

In short: Very large typographic lettering in red on black, with no figure at all. Typography as the only design — a rare choice on a fight short. 8 sizes, XS to 4XL. €39.
When text replaces the image
Fight kit splits into two families. The ones that carry an image — animal, warrior, skull — and the ones that carry a word. The second family is the minority, but it has a long history: professional boxing shorts have carried the fighter’s name from the beginning.
The principle is different. An image is interpreted; a word is read. On a broadcast or from the seats, reading is faster.
What the shorts look like
Black ground with broad red areas set on the diagonal. Large capitals in red edged with white take the left hip and carry over onto the thigh. A smaller crest sits low on the right leg.
The waistband is black. Clean side slits. Sublimated print.
Typography as the only motif
No figure, no animal, no skull: the short rests entirely on capitals at a very large scale. That is a rare choice on the rail, where almost every model carries an image.
The consequence is instant reading: lettering is deciphered faster than a drawing, including in movement and on video. For the full detail of the fight short cut, see the grey geometric fight short.

Worth knowing: if you film your rounds or fight on cards that are streamed, lettering survives compression where a fine drawing turns to mush.
Getting the size right
European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes, XS to 4XL, where most of the market stops at XXL on a fight short. The lettering is scaled per size and takes the same share of the hip from XS to 4XL. The drawcord takes up a change in waist measurement. In a groin guard, go one size up.

Frequently asked questions
Where should a design sit to stay visible in a fight?
High on the hip and the upper thigh. Anything at the hem disappears the moment the guard closes or the leg folds, and anything on the seat is out of frame on most camera angles. This one puts the lettering across the hip for that reason.
What is the difference between MMA shorts and boxing shorts?
An MMA short is built for the ground as well as the feet. It runs longer, to just above the knee, with a side slit on each leg so a closed guard and a leg pass do not bind the hip, and a flat drawcord waistband that stays tied when an opponent pulls on it. Boxing shorts have none of that.
Do these fit true to size?
Yes. European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes run XS to 4XL. The drawcord takes up a change in waist measurement. If you train in a groin guard, go one size up.
Does the print wear off in the wash?
No. The design is sublimated into the fibre rather than laid on top of it, so there is no layer to crack or peel on the mat. Wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F and skip the fabric softener.
Do these come in big and tall sizes?
Yes, up to 4XL. Most of the market stops at XXL on a fight short.
How do you wash MMA shorts?
Machine wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F, no tumble dryer, and no iron on the design. Avoid fabric softener: it coats the weave and slows how fast sweat moves through it.
