In short: No mercy — the phrase comes out of American gyms in the 1990s, when the new sport had neither weight classes nor a round limit. Black ground, skull and dagger, red spatter. 8 sizes, XS to 4XL. €39.
At the start, fighting without weight classes
When the first MMA tournaments appeared in the early 1990s there were no weight classes, no time limit and no compulsory gloves. A 70 kg / 154 lb wrestler could find himself facing a man of 110 kg / 243 lb.
That period is where the graphic codes of the fight short come from: skulls, daggers, spatter, phrases in capitals. The sport has been regulated since, but the imagery stayed.
What the shorts look like
Black throughout. At the centre of the right leg, a helmeted skull run through with a dagger, surrounded by white arabesques, with NO MERCY in red lettering on a banner. The top of the short and the waistband are covered in red spatter carrying over to the left leg.
Side slits at the hem. Sublimated print.
Spatter, a pattern that forgives the mat
The red spatter covers the hip and the hem irregularly. That is not only a styling effect: on a short that spends its sessions on the ground, an irregular pattern absorbs mat marks visually where a flat colour underlines them.
The sword and skull stay the fixed point of the composition, at the centre. For the full detail of the fight short cut, see the grey geometric fight short.

Worth knowing: an irregular pattern is the practical choice for ground work. Mat marks and scuffs read far less on spatter than on a plain ground.
Getting the size right
European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes, XS to 4XL, where most of the market stops at XXL on a fight short. The spatter is scaled per size, so the density of the pattern does not change. The drawcord takes up a change in waist measurement. In a groin guard, go one size up.

Frequently asked questions
What does No Mercy mean on MMA shorts?
It is a slogan from the American gyms of the 1990s, when the sport had no weight classes and no round limit. The phrase and the imagery around it — skulls, daggers, spatter — date from that period and stayed once the rules arrived.
What is the difference between MMA shorts and boxing shorts?
An MMA short is built for the ground as well as the feet. It runs longer, to just above the knee, with a side slit on each leg so a closed guard and a leg pass do not bind the hip, and a flat drawcord waistband that stays tied when an opponent pulls on it. Boxing shorts have none of that.
Do these fit true to size?
Yes. European cut — take your usual size. Eight sizes run XS to 4XL. The drawcord takes up a change in waist measurement. If you train in a groin guard, go one size up.
Does the print wear off in the wash?
No. The design is sublimated into the fibre rather than laid on top of it, so there is no layer to crack or peel on the mat. Wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F and skip the fabric softener.
Do these come in big and tall sizes?
Yes, up to 4XL. Most of the market stops at XXL on a fight short.
How do you wash MMA shorts?
Machine wash inside out at 30 °C / 86 °F, no tumble dryer, and no iron on the design. Avoid fabric softener: it coats the weave and slows how fast sweat moves through it.
