Sportsman of the century, twice
In December 1999, Sports Illustrated named Muhammad Ali sportsman of the century. The same month the BBC gave him its sports personality of the century award, voted by a British public that had watched him beat two of their own champions.
Neither award was only about a record. Ali had stopped boxing in 1981, eighteen years earlier, with 56 wins in 61 fights. What the juries were marking was a sportsman who became a public figure well beyond his sport — the refusal of the draft, the civic stance, three world titles separated by years of enforced absence. The word painted above his head on this canvas points at that reading of the career.

One word carries the canvas from a distance
The boxed word above the head reads from 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in upwards, which is what separates this canvas from the street art pieces loaded with sentences — they need twice that.
