The essentials: the most parodied scientific illustration in the world, published in 1965 and corrected by scientists for sixty years since — everyone still recognises it on sight. Here the line ends on a boxer in guard. The joke lands without knowing the sport, which makes it a safe gift. 2 colours, 6 sizes from S to XXXL, European cut — take your usual size. €59, free standard shipping.
A picture Zallinger did not like
The original is The Road to Homo Sapiens, drawn by Rudolph Zallinger for the Time-Life Nature Library in 1965. Fifteen figures, 25 million years.
Zallinger disliked his own image: the single-file layout, suggested by the palaeoanthropologist Elwyn Simons, implies a straight-line progression when human evolution branches.
Scientists have been correcting it for sixty years. The public recognises it instantly — and that is exactly why the parody works: nobody needs it explained.
The artwork
A horizontal frieze of six flat silhouettes, from the stooped primate to the upright man, ending on a boxer in guard, fists high, knees bent.
Below it, EVOLUTION in spaced serif capitals, ranged to the width of the frieze. No other text. Single-colour white print. Plain back.
The garment
Lined hood with a drawcord, front kangaroo pocket, ribbed cuffs and hem. Straight cut, set-in long sleeves.
