Headgear: a twenty-nine year story
Headgear entered the Olympic boxing programme in 1984, at the Los Angeles Games, and became the image of amateur boxing itself. It left in 2013: AIBA withdrew it from elite men's competition after finding fewer stoppages for head blows without it, peripheral vision and therefore slipping being better bare-headed. Women, juniors and development categories kept it.
The headguard drawn here, with high cheek protection and a chin bar, is therefore still the equipment of every amateur gym and every beginner — which is where the line beneath it comes from.
The design
Portrait format, composition in two parts. At the top, a boxer seen in three-quarter view throws a straight punch towards the viewer: the incoming glove is drawn very large in the foreground, in forced perspective, while the face and the second glove stay behind. The headguard covers forehead, temples, cheeks and jaw.
Below, the quote over three lines: BOXING in large capitals, then BEST SCHOOL, then OF LIFE, in lighter capitals. The line work is sharp, made of solid hatching that carries the movement of the arm.

Tip: the text is part of the drawing, so it reads from two metres / six feet at 57 × 70 cm and from one metre / three feet at 42 × 51 cm. Set the block at eye level, 150 to 165 cm / 59 to 65 in off the floor for the line of the face. The fitting guide covers squeegeeing a design that mixes silhouette and lettering without shifting the lines.

Frequently asked questions
What size of wall sticker should I choose?
Take the 57 × 70 cm / 22 × 28 in for a clear run of more than a metre / three feet — the quote stays readable from two metres / six feet back. The 42 × 51 cm / 17 × 20 in suits a spot above a desk, a door or in a corridor, where you pass within a metre.
Why did headgear disappear from men's amateur boxing?
AIBA withdrew it from elite men's competition in 2013, after finding fewer stoppages for head blows without it: peripheral vision, and therefore slipping, are better bare-headed. Headgear, introduced to the Olympic programme in 1984 in Los Angeles, remains compulsory for women and for juniors.
Does the sticker hold on tile or glass?
Yes, those are the best surfaces of all: smooth and non-porous, they give full adhesion. Rinse with water or rubbing alcohol rather than glass cleaner, which leaves a silicone film. The surface chart lists every possible surface.
Is the text separate from the drawing?
No. The silhouette and the three lines of text form one piece on the same transfer film: it all goes on together, so the alignment is set in advance. The stated dimensions, 42 × 51 and 57 × 70 cm / 17 × 20 and 22 × 28 in, include the image and the quote.
Which colour reads on a light wall without being too harsh?
Dark grey and coffee give a softer contrast than black on a white or cream wall while keeping the quote legible. All 16 colours are shown on the photographed chart on this page.
