A federation written into law
Boxing South Africa regulates professional boxing in the country. It did not grow out of a club association but out of legislation: the South African Boxing Act, passed in 2001, replacing a statute dating from 1954.
It licenses boxers, trainers, managers and promoters, sanctions tournaments and publishes the national rankings.
The country has a long record. Brian Mitchell defended his world super featherweight title twelve times without ever losing it, almost always outside South Africa — the international sporting boycott barred him from fighting at home. Baby Jake Matlala, 1.47 m / 4 ft 10 in, was a four-time world champion in the lightest divisions.
