The country that turned professional boxing down
In 1962 Cuba banned professional boxing on its soil. Cuban fighters stayed amateur, paid by the state, and the country became the most decorated nation in the history of Olympic boxing.
The best known case is Teófilo Stevenson, three times Olympic heavyweight champion — Munich 1972, Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980. He was offered millions of dollars to turn professional and face Muhammad Ali. He refused, with a line that stuck: what is a million dollars against eight million Cubans who love him?
Félix Savón repeated the same treble between 1992 and 2000. Cuba only reopened the door to professionalism in 2022, sixty years on.
The artwork
CUBA in very wide serif capitals with a deliberately flaked texture across the top line, flanked by three stars on each side.
Below, the Cuban flag — blue and white bands, red triangle with its star — carrying a pair of gloves hanging over it, one red, one blue. BOXING closes the composition in white capitals. Plain back.
The garment
Ribbed crew neck, no hood and no pocket. Ribbed cuffs and hem, straight cut, set-in long sleeves. This is the shape that goes under a jacket.

Our advice: a crew neck slides under a jacket without bulking at the neck, which a hood does not. It is the shape for everyday wear. For another boxing nation, see the Boxing South Africa hoodie.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Cuban boxing so dominant?
Because Cuba banned professional boxing in 1962: the best fighters stayed amateur, coached and paid by the state, and the country became the most decorated nation in Olympic boxing history. The ban was only lifted in 2022.
Who was Teófilo Stevenson?
A Cuban heavyweight, three times Olympic champion — Munich 1972, Montreal 1976, Moscow 1980. He turned down millions of dollars to go professional and fight Muhammad Ali, asking what a million dollars was worth against eight million Cubans who loved him.
What size should I order?
European cut — take your usual size, with no conversion to apply. Six sizes, S to XXXL (XXXL is the same as 3XL).
Has any other Cuban won three Olympic golds?
Yes, Félix Savón, also a heavyweight, between 1992 and 2000. Two Cubans hold that treble.
Does this one have a hood?
No, it is a crew neck: no hood, no pocket. It slides under a jacket without bulking at the neck.
How do you wash a printed sweatshirt?
The artwork is applied by heat transfer on PET film, so it holds through the wash without flaking. Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F inside out, no tumble dryer, no iron on the print.
