On 26 August 2017, in Las Vegas, Floyd Mayweather stopped Conor McGregor in the tenth round and took his record to 50 wins, no defeats. That put him one ahead of Rocky Marciano, unbeaten in 49 and retired in 1956, whose mark had stood for sixty-one years.
The number deserves its context: Mayweather boxed for twenty-one years, won world titles in five weight classes, and was never knocked down as a professional. He was counted once, off balance. Nobody has since gone past fifty wins unbeaten at that level.
