An MMA fighter in a boxing ring
On 26 August 2017, in Las Vegas, Conor McGregor had his first professional boxing match — and arranged it directly against Floyd Mayweather, unbeaten in 49 fights. There is no comparable precedent in either sport.
McGregor lasted nine rounds and took the early ones on several unofficial cards before being stopped in the tenth. Mayweather took his record to 50-0 and retired. The fight sold close to 4.3 million pay-per-view buys, second only to Mayweather–Pacquiao. That is the crossover this canvas records.

Landscape format. The two men are painted to mid thigh, back to back, each turned outwards. On the left, Conor McGregor: beard, tattooed torso, fist drawn up in front of him, purple hand wraps. The bodies are worked in broad strokes of grey, blue, turquoise and ochre, with drips and spatter around them. The ground is plain, black or white depending on the option chosen, with a blue wash under the figures. From 3 m / 10 ft you read two men turning away from each other; from 1 m / 3 ft the tattoos and the lettering appear.

Worth knowing: the Colour selector changes the ground, not the figures: the white ground suits light walls and opens the composition up, the black ground cuts the figures out against pale plaster. The composition runs horizontally, each man taking one half with empty ground either side. That breathing space disappears if the canvas is too small — allow 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in as a minimum and 100 × 150 cm / 39 × 59 in over a three-seater.
