Bootleg is a genre of its own
These stacked portrait collages, with a name in heavy lettering above and below, come from the unlicensed merchandise sold outside rap and rock tours in the 1990s — on the car park rather than in the venue.
The aesthetic has since flipped: what were faults — saturated printing, images piled up with no hierarchy, deliberately faded fabric — became a recognised style, and the labels that were being copied now copy it back.
The artwork
Four versions, all built the same way: the name in chrome lettering top and bottom, and between them a collage of four to seven portraits of the boxer, gloves up, croppings overlaid.
What changes from one to the next is the dominant colour and the detail slipped into the collage: green with white gloves, red with the belts, green with a tank under the word TANK — his nickname — and a fourth in green with four portraits.
The garment
Long sleeve top, ribbed crew neck, oversize cut, ribbed cuffs and hem. The fabric is faded from new — the variation in shade is part of the product.
