Mickey, the trainer
In the Rocky series, Mickey Goldmill is a former fighter turned trainer, owner of a run-down gym. The character is played by Burgess Meredith, an actor then in his seventies, who earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the role.
His function in the story is the old man who shouts — he does not encourage, he demands. That tone is what made the character a reference point for the trainer figure on screen.
The first film came out in 1976, written by Sylvester Stallone when he was unknown, and won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.
What it looks like on
The artwork is a circular crest centred on the chest, in navy on the ecru ground.
At the centre, a close-up photograph of the character: cap, mouth open, finger pointed, in a heavily textured duotone — the image is run through with cracks, like a damaged print.
Around it, in an arc: PROPERTY OF at the top, MIGHTY MICKS at the bottom, with two stars either side.
Beneath, BOXING GYM in white capitals on a navy band, then PHILADELPHIA and EST 1976 in black.
Premium cotton, crew neck, short sleeves, straight cut. Plain back.
