Denver, 12 November 1993
The first UFC was held at the McNichols Arena in Denver in front of 7,800 people. Eight fighters, a one-night tournament, no weight classes, no rounds, no gloves. A 78 kg / 172 lb Brazilian, Royce Gracie, won all three fights by submission — proving in one night that the ground was worth as much as striking. The Unified Rules of MMA, which govern every competition today, were adopted in 2000 by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.
That mix of stand-up and ground is exactly what the lettering tells: a high kick on one side, a closed guard on the other, inside the same three letters.
The design
Landscape format. The three letters M M A are drawn in very wide solid capitals, tight against each other. Two fighters appear as white reserves inside them: on the left a high kick, leg extended at head height; on the right the second fighter covers up, fists in front of the face. The figures cross the downstrokes, so letters and bodies read together.
Below the lettering, the line MIXED MARTIAL ARTS in condensed capitals runs the full width and acts as a base for the composition.

Tip: the 58 × 89 cm / 23 × 35 in covers almost a metre / three feet of width: that is the size that works above a mat, a cage or a rack, where you stand three metres / ten feet back. The 20 × 31 cm / 8 × 12 in suits a door or a narrow panel between two windows. The fitting guide sets out the method surface by surface.

Frequently asked questions
What size of MMA sticker should I choose?
Three landscape sizes: 20 × 31 cm / 8 × 12 in for a door or a narrow panel, 38 × 58 cm / 15 × 23 in above a low unit, 58 × 89 cm / 23 × 35 in for a training wall seen from three metres / ten feet. The usual rule: about two thirds of the width of whatever it hangs above.
When did MMA appear as a sport?
The first UFC was held on 12 November 1993 in Denver: eight fighters, a one-night tournament, no weight classes and no rounds. Royce Gracie won by submission. The Unified Rules of MMA, which govern current competition, date from 2000 and the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board.
Does the design go on in one piece?
Yes. Everything is cut from a single sheet and held by the clear transfer film: the spacing is set in advance. You apply the whole block at once and peel the film last.
Does the sticker hold on a door or a metal locker?
Yes, smooth metal is a very good surface, on a par with tile and glass. Degrease with rubbing alcohol before fitting. The surface chart lists the surfaces to avoid, textured render and exposed brick first among them.
Which colour for a dark wall?
White for a sharp contrast, gold for a warmer result on a black or charcoal wall — it is the shade that picks up spotlight best. All 11 are shown on the photographed chart on this page.
