The essentials: a pair of training sticks in soft foam with a contrasting graphic pattern — multicoloured shards and chevrons covering the whole upper section. Black grip and flat strap closed in a loop. 3 colourways: black and pink, white and blue, black and yellow. €29 the pair, free shipping.
A contrasting pattern along the whole length
The soft foam body is covered with a pattern of shards and chevrons in two or three contrasting tones, spread along the whole length, on sticks sold in pairs. That break in contrast is picked up earlier in peripheral vision than a plain surface — useful when setting the movement up, or in a poorly lit gym.
The retina does not work the same way at the centre and at the edges. At the centre it is rich in cones: high definition, fine colour, but relatively slow. At the periphery it is dominated by rods: little detail, little colour, but very high sensitivity to movement and contrast. That is the zone that raises the alarm before you have even turned your eyes.
Hence the point of a strongly contrasted stick. The light shards on a dark ground on this model create a break in contrast along the whole length, which the periphery of the retina picks up earlier than a plain surface. In practice you see the movement coming a fraction of a second sooner — the time it takes to slip instead of stepping back.
The sticks
Two identical sticks per pack. The upper section is foam covered with a pattern of shards and chevrons spread along the whole length, in two to three contrasting tones. The lower section forms the black grip, with a clean transition.
The strap is a flat strap closed in a loop, stitched at the end of the grip, worn round the wrist. It holds the stick when the hand opens during a fast movement.
The 3 colourways
Black and pink: dark ground, pink and white shards. White and blue: light ground, blue and black chevrons. Black and yellow: dark ground, yellow and blue patterning. The grips are black on all three.

Who a contrasting pattern is for
Beginners first, because a cue that appears earlier leaves time to execute the slip properly instead of being caught by it. That is what builds the right movement before speed is added.
Poorly lit gyms next. Against a dark wall or under yellow lighting, plain foam blends into the background. A pattern with a strong contrast break stays legible.
And anyone who films their sessions: the pattern stays visible on screen even at speed, which lets you review the path of the stick and correct the plane of the slip.
The tip: once the movement is established, the logic reverses — a plainer stick forces later detection and deliberately hardens the drill. The unmarked sticks are made for that stage.
You may also like
- Single training stick — one stick, fluo foam, black grip and a braided cord strap, if you are starting out or replacing a piece.
- Pair of plain sticks — two sticks in a strong colour with lettering and a flat strap, if you want to work both hands.
- Pair of unmarked plain sticks — two completely smooth sticks, red and black or all black, if you want a plain cue and more difficulty.
All four models are gathered in the boxing training sticks collection.
Frequently asked questions
How many sticks are in the pack?
Two identical sticks, in the colourway chosen, for €29. For a single stick, the single model is 59 cm / 23 in.
Why is a training stick coloured?
Because a boxer detects movement in peripheral vision, not by fixing on the object. The periphery of the retina is dominated by rods, very sensitive to movement and contrast but not to detail. A strongly contrasted pattern is therefore spotted earlier than a plain surface.
What is the difference with the plain sticks?
The visual cue. This model is covered with contrasting shards along its whole length, which makes it detectable earlier and eases learning. The plain sticks and the unmarked sticks call for later detection, so more demanding.
What is a boxing training stick for?
Working slipping, timing and reflexes with a partner. A foam stick coming at the face triggers the menace reflex — the involuntary blink at an object approaching the eye — with no risk of injury, which lets you repeat it until you control it. A punching bag cannot do that: it never comes towards you.
Do these sticks suit poorly lit gyms?
That is one of their strengths. Against a dark wall or under yellow lighting, plain foam blends into the background. The strong contrast break stays legible, including on session video shot at speed.
How do you look after foam sticks?
A damp cloth on the foam and the grip after use, then air drying. Do not store them bent or wedged under heavy kit: foam keeps the deformation and the stick loses its straightness.
