The essentials: a pair of training sticks in soft foam, entirely plain, with no marking or pattern. Black grip and flat strap closed in a loop. Two versions: red and black, red upper half and black grip, or all black along the whole length. €29 the pair, free shipping.
Entirely plain, with no marking or pattern
The soft foam surface is plain along the whole length, in red and black or all black, on sticks sold in pairs. That absence of a visual cue is deliberate: the periphery of the retina picks up contrast first, so a plain dark stick is seen later — it is the progression tool of the range, the one that forces a faster reaction.
If contact hurts, the boxer slows down. He anticipates, steps back one pace further than needed, shuts his eyes — and learns a bad version of the movement, calibrated on fear of contact rather than on the real path of a punch. The coach, for his part, no longer dares go fast, and the drill runs empty.
Soft foam solves both problems at once. It deforms on contact, so the stick can travel at full speed and land for real. The boxer feels that he has been hit — which is what teaches — without it stopping him going again thirty times over. That trade-off, and only that, is what makes the drill usable.
The sticks
Two identical sticks per pack. Soft foam body, black grip on the lower section, a clean transition between the two on the red and black version, continuous on the black one.
The strap is a flat strap closed in a loop, stitched at the end of the grip, worn round the wrist.
No marking, no pattern: the surface is entirely smooth and plain along the whole length.
The 2 colourways and what they change
Red and black: bright red upper half, black grip, a clear break between the two. Black: plain along the whole length, with no visible division between body and grip.
That absence of marking has a measurable effect in training. The periphery of the retina detects contrast first: a plain dark surface is picked up later than a pattern with a strong break. The black version is therefore the progression tool of the range — the one that forces you to see later and react faster. The red and black keeps a clear cue for setting-up sessions.

Where it fits in a progression
The order that works, in three stages.
- Setting up — stick clearly visible, slow speed. You build the plane of the slip: slip to the side, roll under the sweep, torso upright, eyes open. A contrasting cue helps here.
- Rhythm — same drill, real speed, alternating sides and planes. This is the stage where two sticks become useful.
- Late detection — plain dark stick, a less legible start. You are no longer working the movement but the speed of reading. That is what the black version of this model allows.
The tip: do not skip the first stage. A dark stick used too early mostly teaches you to step back, because the boxer picks up the movement when it is already too late to slip cleanly. For that phase, the patterned sticks are more legible.
You may also like
- Single training stick — one stick, fluo foam, black grip and a braided cord strap, if you are starting out or replacing a piece.
- Pair of plain sticks — two sticks in a strong colour with lettering and a flat strap, if you want to work both hands.
- Pair of patterned sticks — two sticks with contrasting graphics along the whole length, if you want a visual cue picked up earlier.
All four models are gathered in the boxing training sticks collection.
Frequently asked questions
How many sticks are in the pack?
Two identical sticks, in the colourway chosen, for €29. For a single stick, the single model is 59 cm / 23 in and comes in 4 colours.
Why are training sticks made of foam?
Because a stick that hurts distorts the drill. The boxer slows down, steps back too far and shuts his eyes, and the coach no longer dares go fast. Soft foam deforms on contact: the stick can travel at full speed and land for real, without stopping you going again thirty times.
What is the difference with the patterned sticks?
Legibility. These are entirely plain, with no marking or pattern: the periphery of the retina, sensitive to contrast, picks them up later. It is a progression tool. The patterned sticks are spotted earlier and suit the setting-up stage.
What is a boxing training stick for?
Working slipping, timing and reflexes with a partner. A foam stick coming at the face triggers the menace reflex — the involuntary blink at an object approaching the eye — with no risk of injury, which lets you repeat it until you control it. A punching bag cannot do that: it never comes towards you.
Which colourway should I choose?
Red and black to keep a clear cue, useful when setting up and with beginners. All black to harden the drill deliberately once the plane of the slip is established: detection happens later, so the reaction has to be faster.
Can you train alone with a stick?
No, you need a partner or a coach: they hold the stick and create the stimulus. For solo work on the same qualities, reflex balls and double end bags are worked on your own.
