Sylvester Stallone wrote the Rocky screenplay in three and a half days, after watching Chuck Wepner — a heavy underdog — last fifteen rounds with Muhammad Ali in March 1975. The film came out in 1976 on a budget of around a million dollars and won Best Picture. Stallone had refused to sell the script unless he was allowed to play the part.
