The essentials: a ribbed turn-up beanie in 6 colours — black, dark grey, light grey, navy, royal blue, marled red — with a white woven label stitched onto the cuff, carrying the Esprit Boxe mark and the FOR THE GLORY line. 21.5 cm / 8.5 in tall with the cuff folded, one size. €29, free delivery.
The cuff is not a styling detail
On a beanie, the cuff does two things no other finish does. It doubles the thickness of knit exactly where the cold is felt — around the ears and across the lower forehead — and it creates a denser band that holds the beanie in place without having to pull it tight.
It also gives an adjustment few beanies offer: the number of turns. One turn more and the beanie sits above the ears, with a thick band across the forehead; one turn less and it comes down to the nape. That is why a boxer keeps his on through the skipping and takes it off at the first round: the height changes in two seconds, without removing it.
What is on the beanie
Vertical ribbed knit, with a wide cuff folded over about a third of the height. At the centre of the cuff sits a white rectangular label with stitched edges: the Esprit Boxe mark on the left, ESPRIT BOXE in capitals on the right with FOR THE GLORY in small lettering beneath, all in black.
The six colours cover two registers: three neutrals (black, dark grey, light grey) and three stronger shades (navy, royal blue, marled red). On the last two the yarn is lightly marled, which shows at a metre and gives the rib some depth.

The tip: the marled red and the royal blue sit better on a dark sweatshirt than on an already colourful jacket. For everyday wear with anything, dark grey is the colour that goes furthest — more so than black, which needs a contrast to stand out.

Frequently asked questions
Which size of turn-up beanie should I choose?
One size: the ribbed knit stretches both ways. The height is set by the number of cuff turns, around 2 to 3 cm / 0.8 to 1.2 in per turn. Flat, the beanie measures 21 cm / 8.3 in wide and 21.5 cm / 8.5 in tall with the cuff folded.
What is the difference between a turn-up beanie and a long beanie?
The folded cuff gives a double thickness of knit over the ears and a compact silhouette. The long beanie, or slouchy, falls on the nape with no cuff and stands 28 cm / 11 in tall. The detail of both builds sits in the measurements taken on the two constructions.
Does a turn-up beanie itch?
The knit on this model is a fine knitted fabric, not a heavy wool: the rib stays soft against the forehead. The cuff lays two thicknesses around the head, which makes the contact gentler than a single stretched layer.
Can it be worn in the gym and not only outdoors?
Yes, by folding it one turn more to clear the ears. During bag work it holds the hair back and takes the sweat off the forehead, where a peak gets in the way as soon as you drop your head.
How do you wash a beanie without stretching it?
Hand wash cold, no spin, then dry flat. A beanie hung up or put through a tumble dryer stretches out and loses the hold that keeps it over the ears. Do not iron the woven label.
Which colour makes the best gift?
Of the 6 colours, dark grey and black are the two safe choices, wearable with anything. Royal blue and marled red suit someone who already wears strong colours.
