The orange inside was never a styling choice
The MA-1 bomber was developed by the US Air Force in the early 1950s to replace the leather jackets that had become pointless in the pressurised cockpits of jet aircraft. Light nylon, polyester fill, ribbing at the collar, cuffs and waist: the silhouette everyone now calls a bomber comes from there.
And there was a precise reason for its bright orange lining. The jacket was reversible. A downed pilot, in the sea or on isolated ground, turned his jacket inside out: the sage green outer was invisible from the air, the orange was visible for hundreds of metres. The lining served as a distress signal for rescue crews.
Alpha Industries won the military manufacturing contract in 1963 and launched civilian versions in the early 1970s. The orange stayed. It is what you see when this jacket opens, quilted in diamonds.
Cut, fabric and finish
MA-1 cut: ribbed collar, cuffs and hem as well, which locks the garment in place and stops air coming up from below. Full zip with a storm flap, two welt pockets at the front, and the model's signature — a zipped pocket on the left sleeve, closed by a flap.
Inside, the diamond-quilted orange lining covers the body, with a zipped inside pocket. The outer shell is matt, with no sheen.
The markings
On the left chest, the UFC mark in red, embroidered, above ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP in very small type. On the back, the same composition very large.

How do you look after it?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F, inside out, no tumble dryer and no iron directly on the print. Washing inside out is what protects the marking: it is the friction against the drum that dulls a print, more than the water.
