The puffer jacket was born from a fishing trip that went wrong
In 1936, the American Eddie Bauer was returning from a fishing trip on the Olympic Peninsula when freezing rain caught him far from shelter. Soaked and frozen, he felt drowsiness coming on — the first signs of hypothermia. He fired three rifle shots to alert the partner who had gone ahead, then fell asleep against a tree. He later wrote that he would have stayed there had his partner not come back.
He remembered a story his uncle had told him: a coat lined with down that had saved him during the Russo-Japanese War. He had a prototype sewn, filled with goose down and compartmented by quilting to stop the feathers settling at the bottom of the garment, and named it the Skyliner. He patented it in 1940.
The principle has not changed since: it is the horizontal stitch lines you see on this jacket that hold the fill in place and spread the warmth across the whole body.
Cut, fabric and finish
Padded stand collar, which holds upright once the zip is up and protects the neck. Wide-band horizontal quilting on the body and the sleeves — wider baffles than on the hooded model, which is what gives the volume through the chest.
Full zip, side pockets, and black ribbed cuffs and hem on all four colourways — the detail that closes the jacket at the wrists and the waist and keeps cold air from coming up.
The marking sits on the right chest: the official Esprit Boxe logo with FOR THE GLORY below. A round badge sits on the arm.

How do you look after it?
Machine wash at 30 °C / 86 °F, inside out, no tumble dryer and no iron directly on the print. Washing inside out is what protects the marking: it is the friction against the drum that dulls a print, more than the water.
