Before foam, there was horsehair
Gloves like the ones on this canvas — brown leather, round shape, short cuff — were padded with horsehair, sometimes topped up with kapok or plant fibre. Horsehair packs down: after a few sessions the padding migrated to the edges and left the knuckles almost bare in the middle.
The move to latex foam and then polyurethane, standard through the 1970s and 1980s, changed everything: the density stays even, the protection no longer shifts, and the glove keeps its shape for years. It is also what made heavy sparring gloves possible, which could not be built in horsehair without becoming unusable.
What you see
Portrait format. The ground is a dark green painted wooden surface in vertical boards, with chipped paint and wear marks. At the centre, a pair of brown leather gloves, round and short in shape, hangs by a metal chain from a round hook.
Pale inscriptions appear on the leather of each glove and on the two plates, in a period lettering that the artwork leaves partly illegible — no brand is identifiable in it. Either side, two engraved rectangular metal plates are screwed into the wood. From 3 m / 10 ft you read two brown gloves on green; from 1 m / 3 ft the rivets and the chipped paint appear.

A whole setting around the gloves
The subject does not stop at the pair: the green door, the chipped paint, the chain and the two screwed plates take half the surface and carry the aged finish. Below 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in you are left with two brown gloves on green; from 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in the rivets and the grain of the wood appear. How were old boxing gloves padded?
With horsehair, sometimes mixed with kapok or plant fibre. It packed down with use and migrated to the edges, leaving the knuckles thinly covered. Latex foam and then polyurethane, standard from the 1970s, keep an even density.

How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
