When a cornerman decides his boxer should take no more punishment, he throws the towel into the ring and the fight stops at once. The gesture comes from nineteenth-century bare-knuckle boxing, where the corner threw in the sponge to signal surrender, and it gave English the phrase still used well away from the ring. The corner towel has stayed the most used object between rounds.
