On 4 July 1919, in Toledo, Jack Dempsey faced Jess Willard in a wooden arena built for the occasion, in the open air and in heat so fierce that resin seeped from the new stands. Dempsey won in three rounds and took the world heavyweight title. Boxing was fought outdoors, in full sun, long before air-conditioned halls. This towel takes up that outdoor use.

Fabric softener leaves a film on microfibre and reduces how much water it takes up: that is the one thing to keep in mind to preserve quick drying over time. A 30 °C / 86 °F wash is enough, including after a day by the sea.

What size beach towel should I choose?
70x140 cm / 28x55 in matches the classic bath sheet and is enough for one person lying down. 100x200 cm / 39x79 in leaves margin around the body. The 150 cm / 59 in widths take two, or work as a beach cloth. For the gym bag, 50x100 cm / 20x39 in is the most compact.
Does microfibre really dry faster than cotton?
Yes: the fibres are finer and hold water at the surface instead of storing it in a loop pile. The towel dries faster after use, folds smaller and weighs less in a bag. In exchange it wants washing without fabric softener.
Does sand stick to microfibre?
Less than to looped cotton: the surface is smooth and the sand comes off with the back of a hand once the towel is dry. Shake it out before folding rather than rinsing it on the spot.
What is the difference between the black and the white colourway?
The black carries a gold gradient print, the white a black print. Black gives the strongest contrast with the gold; white throws the light back and stays cool to the touch in full sun. Both come in the same nine sizes.
Can it be used as a sports towel?
