In the first film the character trains on sides of beef in a cold store. The scene was not invented for the screen: Joe Frazier genuinely worked in a slaughterhouse and hit the carcasses on his breaks. Frazier appears in the film himself, as himself.
This cap, in the Rocky Balboa style, carries the name of a fictional boxing club, printed in gold across the front.
What the gold lettering gives you
The text is printed on four lines in a matt gold: BALBOA in large capitals, PHILADELPHIA, PA small beneath, BOXING CLUB underlined with a rule, then 19 (USA) 47 at the foot. The line work is distressed, like a rubber stamp pressed unevenly. At four metres you register a gold block; at one metre all four lines read. The rest of the crown is plain.
Cut and adjustment
Flat brim delivered unbent, structured 13 cm / 5.1 in crown, rear snapback closure. The measurement table shared by every flat brim cap sits on the Everlast snapback listing.

Matt gold reads strongest on the dark grounds: black, navy, deep red and olive give the cleanest lettering. On yellow and white the print works tonally and shows itself from closer in.
Worth a look
The Rocky leather-look cap takes the same reference onto a grained black finish. See also the Boxing Club cap and the Brooklyn cap. Everything sits in the boxing caps collection.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Rocky train on sides of beef?
Because Joe Frazier actually did. The world heavyweight champion worked in a slaughterhouse and hit the hanging carcasses on his breaks. The film scene takes that directly, and Frazier appears in it as himself.
What size cap should I get?
The snap closure covers 55–59 cm / 21.7–23.2 in. Measure with a tape about 1 cm / 0.4 in above the eyebrows, around the back of the skull over the bump, without pulling tight.
Which colourway should I pick?
Dark grounds — black, navy, deep red and olive — give the strongest contrast with gold lettering. White, yellow, pink and khaki work tonally, for a quieter result.
Is the Balboa Boxing Club a real gym?
No. It is the fictional club from the films, and the 1947 date on the cap belongs to that fiction. The city is real enough: Philadelphia produced Joe Frazier, Bernard Hopkins and Sonny Liston, which is why the films are set there.
How do you protect a gold print?
Hand wash at 30 °C / 86 °F maximum with a mild soap, dabbing the lettering rather than rubbing it. Dry in the shade: repeated friction and direct sun are the two things that dull a gold print fastest.
All nine colourways sit under the same listing: pick yours from the drop-down above.
