In the Bronx in 1910, Jacob Golomb, seventeen, a tailor's son and a swimmer, sewed his own swimsuit because the shop-bought ones did not survive a training season. He sold it with a guarantee — it would last more than a year — and that promise gave the brand its name.
Seven years later a young heavyweight called Jack Dempsey asked him for headgear that could take more than fifteen rounds. Golomb built it. In 1919 Dempsey won the world heavyweight title in Everlast gear, and the brand never left boxing. In 1925 Golomb replaced the leather waistband on boxing trunks with an elasticated one — the belt everybody wears today.
The logo on the front panel
EVERLAST is printed in red, arced with the curve dipping downward, with BOXING underlined just beneath. The red is picked up on the brim, on the crown button and on the ventilation eyelets. Red on black carries: at four metres EVERLAST still reads, and it is BOXING, in small underlined capitals, that asks you to come within a metre.
Head size and measurements for flat brim caps
This table covers every flat brim cap in the collection. To measure your head, run a tape about 1 cm / 0.4 in above the eyebrows and around the back of the skull over the bump, without pulling tight. Measure twice.
| Measurement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Head size | 55–59 cm / 21.7–23.2 in — range covered by the rear snaps |
| Brim length | 7 cm / 2.8 in — shadow falls to the base of the nose, face left clear |
| Crown height | 13 cm / 5.1 in — high crown, holds itself upright and does not collapse |
| Closure | Plastic snaps — position by position, it does not slacken |

The 13 cm / 5.1 in crown is what separates a snapback from a curved peak cap, which tops out at 9 cm / 3.5 in. It rides higher on the skull and leaves the forehead clear, which also makes it the airier of the two in hot weather.
Worth a look
The Everlast boxing cap takes the same brand onto a curved peak with seventeen treatments to choose from. The Boxing Club cap keeps the flat brim without a brand name, and the Rocky leather-look cap swaps the twill for a grained finish. Everything sits in the boxing caps collection.
Frequently asked questions
What size boxing cap should I get?
The rear snaps cover 55–59 cm / 21.7–23.2 in, which fits most adults. Measure with a tape about 1 cm / 0.4 in above the eyebrows, around the back of the skull over the bump, without pulling tight.
Flat brim or curved brim — what is the difference?
Crown height above all: 13 cm / 5.1 in on a flat brim against 9 cm / 3.5 in on a curved one. The first rides high on the skull, the second sits on the head and comes further down the forehead. Brim length is the same, 7 cm / 2.8 in either way.
How old is Everlast?
Founded in 1910, when Jacob Golomb started the brand in the Bronx at seventeen with swimsuits guaranteed for more than a year. The move into boxing came in 1917, when Jack Dempsey ordered headgear that would hold up past fifteen rounds.
Which boxers made Everlast famous?
Jack Dempsey first, world heavyweight champion in 1919 in Everlast gear. Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Mike Tyson followed. The founder’s son, Daniel Golomb, is the one who had the logo enlarged on the gloves so it would read on television.
How do you clean a black cap without dulling it?
By hand, lukewarm water at 30 °C / 86 °F maximum, mild soap with no bleaching agent, soft brush on the sweatband. Rinse without scrubbing the print and dry in the open air out of direct sun, over something round to hold the 13 cm / 5.1 in crown.
Single colourway: add it straight to the basket.
