The split glove at Wembley
On 18 June 1963, at Wembley, Cassius Clay fought the Briton Henry Cooper. He had predicted a win in the fifth. At the end of the fourth, Cooper caught him with a left hook the British press would call 'Enry's 'Ammer: Clay went into the ropes and down. The bell saved him.
In the corner, his trainer Angelo Dundee pointed out a split glove to the referee and asked for a replacement. By the time the question was settled, Clay had recovered. He came out for the fifth, opened a cut over Cooper's eye, and the fight was stopped on the injury. The episode remains one of the most argued over in his career. This canvas does not tell that story: it holds the energy it took to get back up.
What you see
Portrait format, deep black ground across the whole surface. The boxer is painted from the waist up at the centre, fists drawn into a high guard, red gloves, bare chested, looking straight to camera.
Behind him, a red swirl turns around the torso, denser at the edges, leaving the face clear, with sparks suspended in it. No text, no lettering, no setting. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a red circle on black; from 1 m / 3 ft the face and the eyes separate from the movement.

Worth knowing: the image is printed edge to edge on deep black, with no border. On a light wall the edge of the canvas shows by itself; on a dark wall a frame gives it a clean outline and sets off the swirl. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A red circle that carries at distance
The composition is one shape, a red disc on black: it stays readable at five metres and takes small sizes better than the canvases loaded with text. Allow 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in in a corridor and 90 × 130 cm / 35 × 51 in on a clear living room span. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
Who knocked Muhammad Ali down in 1963?
Henry Cooper, at Wembley on 18 June 1963, with a left hook at the end of the fourth round. The bell saved Clay, who came out for the fifth and won on a cut.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is the gold border part of the canvas?
No: the gold line in the room photograph is the frame used for the shot, sold separately. The canvas itself is printed edge to edge on the black, with no printed border. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Is there any text on this canvas?
None at all — no name, no quote, no signature. One figure, one red swirl and a black ground, which is what makes it the quietest of the Ali portraits to place.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
