The essentials: Ali in full stride, painted in watercolour on a white ground, the body dissolving into spatter, with his best known line printed small below the figure. 10 sizes from 20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in to 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in. Frame sold separately. From €19 to €109 depending on size, free standard shipping.
A heavyweight with a dance step named after him
There is a move that carries his name: the Ali shuffle. A fast criss-cross of the feet, performed on the spot, in guard, at full speed — the stance switches without the upper body moving. He showed it in public for the first time defending his title on 14 November 1966 in Houston, against Cleveland Williams.
Technically it does nothing: it opens no gap and sets up no punch. What it says to the opponent, the crowd and the judges is that after several rounds the legs are still fresh. No heavyweight had done it before him and very few have since. This canvas holds that boxer — always moving, never posed.
What you see
Portrait format, pure white ground. The boxer is painted full length, caught mid-stride, lead leg extended and rear arm cocked, white trunks with a black waistband marked AMPRO, high laced boots. The body is built in watercolour, in browns and greys, and breaks up outwards into spatter and fine flicks that carry the movement into empty space.
Bottom left, the line float like a butterfly, sting like a bee in small grey capitals between quotation marks, with the name below. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a running figure on white; from 1 m / 3 ft you see that nothing is closed and the whole outline is open.

Worth knowing: the white ground merges into a white wall and the figure then reads as though painted straight onto the plaster, with no visible edge. That is the intended effect, and it asks for a clean plain wall. On a coloured wall, a wooden frame gives the edge back. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
An open outline needs surface
Nothing is closed: the arms and legs dissolve into spatter, and it is surface that decides whether that spatter reads. Below 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in it comes across as a grey halo; from 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in each droplet separates. The quote at the foot reads from 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Ali shuffle?
A fast criss-cross of the feet performed on the spot, in guard, at full speed. He first showed it on 14 November 1966 against Cleveland Williams. It opens no gap and sets up no punch — it announces that the legs are still fresh.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is there any text on this canvas?
Yes, bottom left: float like a butterfly, sting like a bee in small grey capitals with the name below, and the AMPRO mark on the waistband of the trunks. Nothing else.
Is the background of this canvas white or transparent?
It is printed white, not transparent. On a white wall the figure appears to sit directly on the plaster; on a coloured wall a wooden frame gives the canvas a defined edge.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
