A heavyweight of five foot ten
Tyson stood 1.78 m / 5 ft 10 in with a 1.80 m / 71 in reach. In a division where the average clears 1.90 m / 6 ft 3 in, those numbers should have been a handicap: Trevor Berbick was 1.85 m / 6 ft 1 in, Michael Spinks 1.89 m / 6 ft 2 in, Lennox Lewis 1.96 m / 6 ft 5 in.
The reach deficit was answered with entry speed. Of his first nineteen professional fights, twelve ended in the opening round: the opponent never had time to set a jab, so the longer arms never came into it.
