Ninety-one seconds
On 27 June 1988, in Atlantic City, Tyson faced Michael Spinks, unbeaten in 31 fights and the only man to have beaten Larry Holmes. It was the richest fight ever staged to that date: the two shared more than 30 million dollars.
It lasted 91 seconds. A right to the body put Spinks down for the first time in his career, then a short right to the jaw left him on his back. He never fought again. That night is the exact peak of Tyson's career, and this canvas holds that energy without depicting the fight.
What you see
Portrait format, black ground. The boxer is painted from the waist up, fists drawn into a high guard, red gloves, bare chested, dark trunks with a pale trim. Behind him, shards and spatters of orange, gold and red fan upwards and outwards like sparks.
The body itself is worked in the same warm tones, with no hard outline. From 3 m / 10 ft you read an orange burst on black; from 1 m / 3 ft the face and the glove laces come through.

A black ground needs margin around it
Black absorbs the edge of the canvas: on a dark wall you need margin for the outline to register. Allow at least 20 cm / 8 in of bare wall on each side, or move up a size on a light wall. 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in suits an entrance, 90 × 130 cm / 35 × 51 in a living room.
