A stolen bicycle and a policeman who trained boxers
In 1954, in Louisville, a 12 year old had his new bicycle stolen at a fair. Furious, he went looking for a policeman to report it and announced that he was going to whip whoever took it. The officer, Joe Martin, told him he had better learn to fight before promising that — and that he happened to train boxers in the basement of the building.
Six weeks later Cassius Clay had his first amateur bout, three rounds of two minutes, and won it on points. Six years later he brought back Olympic gold from Rome. The bicycle was never found. This canvas holds that energy: a face that will not stay still.
What you see
Square composition on a white ground. Ali is shown from the waist up, leaning forward, mouth open, a red glove thrown forward on the right of the frame and the second, orange, held lower. The head is wrapped in a patterned band.
Face and torso are cut into juxtaposed planes of colour — red, orange, purple, blue, yellow — with no gradients, each plane closed by a hard edge. Around the figure, pointed shards and spatter run out into the white and break the outline. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a dense patch of colour in the middle of a white square; from 1 m / 3 ft the face and the gloves reassemble.
