The essentials: Ali painted facing forward, head bowed, white trunks with ALI on a black waistband, a monarch butterfly and a bee settled either side of his shoulders — the most quoted line in boxing, turned into an image. Pale blue ground, red gloves. 10 sizes from 20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in to 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in. Frame sold separately. From €19 to €109 depending on size, free standard shipping.
The line is not Ali's
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee has stuck to Muhammad Ali since 1964, but he did not write it. It comes from Drew Brown, known as Bundini, his cornerman and travelling companion, who launched it before the first Sonny Liston fight in Miami in February 1964.
The full version the two of them chanted runs on: the hands cannot hit what the eyes cannot see. It is an exact description of how Ali boxed as a heavyweight — the footwork of a lighter man, legs always moving, guard deliberately low, and a right that came from nowhere. Bundini Brown stayed in his corner to the end of the career. The line outlived them both.
What you see
Portrait format, painted with visible impasto. The boxer is shown facing forward, framed from the thighs to the crown, head bowed, shoulders and arms heavy, bare chested, arms at his sides, red gloves visible low on each side. The trunks are white with a black waistband carrying the word ALI in capitals.
On the left, a monarch butterfly in orange and black settled on the shoulder; on the right, a bee with its wings spread. The ground is a plain pale blue worked with the brush. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a boxer with his head down on blue; from 1 m / 3 ft the two insects appear and the line puts itself together.

Worth knowing: the face is lowered and left in shadow, so the canvas reads as a scene rather than a portrait, which makes it easy to place in a living room. 20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in also makes it a straightforward gift to post. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Two insects carry the whole reading
The canvas only makes sense once the butterfly and the bee have been spotted, and at 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in they are about fifteen centimetres / six inches across. Below 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in they pass for patches of colour; from 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in they read from a sofa. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
Who came up with float like a butterfly, sting like a bee?
From Drew Brown, known as Bundini, his cornerman, who coined it before the first Sonny Liston fight in February 1964. The fuller version the two of them chanted runs on: the hands cannot hit what the eyes cannot see. It is a technical description rather than a poetic one — Ali weighed over 90 kg / 198 lb and moved on the feet of a welterweight, guard deliberately low, torso out of range on footwork alone.
Can you see the boxer's face on this canvas?
Yes, but head bowed and in shadow: the features are suggested and no gaze is directed at the viewer. That is what makes the canvas read as a scene rather than a portrait, and what makes it easy to place in a shared room.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
What is the smallest size available?
20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in, small enough to stand on a shelf and easy to post as a gift. At that size the butterfly and the bee read as patches of colour rather than as insects.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
