An Olympic sport since 688 BC
Boxing entered the ancient Olympics in 688 BC, under the name pygmachia. No rounds, no weight classes, no ring: two men fought until one gave in, hands wrapped in leather thongs called himantes.
The sport disappeared with the ancient Games, resurfaced in England in the eighteenth century as bare knuckle fighting, and was codified by the Queensberry rules in 1867. It returned to the modern Olympic programme in 1904, in St Louis. The word printed on this canvas has close to two thousand seven hundred years behind it.
What you see
Landscape format, textured beige ground imitating old paper, with line-drawn boxers showing faintly through it and a printed black rule around all four edges. At the centre, the word boxing runs the full width in very heavy capitals, each letter filled with a different painting — ring scenes, fighters in action, gloves, flat blues, reds and yellows.
Above it, float like a butterfly; below, sting like a bee, both in weathered black capitals. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a word in colour between two lines of text; from 1 m / 3 ft each letter gives up the scene inside it.

Worth knowing: there is no face on this canvas, which makes it the one for a shared room, a living room or a club hall, where you do not want one champion's portrait on the wall. From 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in the two lines of capitals read at two metres. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
A landscape typographic piece sits over furniture
The central word runs the full width, so the canvas asks for width and settles above a sofa, a console or a bench. Allow 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in over a three-seater. The two framing lines read at two metres from 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What does the text on this canvas say?
Float like a butterfly above the central word and sting like a bee below it, in black capitals, with boxing in illustrated letters between them.
How long has boxing been an Olympic sport?
Since 688 BC at the ancient Games, as pygmachia, fought with leather thongs and no rounds or weight classes. It returned to the modern programme in 1904 in St Louis.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is there a boxer on this canvas?
No portrait — only line-drawn figures showing faintly through the paper ground and small painted scenes inside the letters. It is the piece for a room where you do not want one champion on the wall.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
