A line written by his cornerman
The line on this canvas is credited to Muhammad Ali, but it was born in his corner. Its author is Drew Brown, known as Bundini, who joined the fighter's camp in 1963 and stayed to the end of his career. He first used it before the first Sonny Liston fight, in February 1964 in Miami Beach.
The less quoted second half completes the picture: the hands cannot hit what the eyes cannot see. That is a technical description, not a poetic image. Ali weighed over 90 kg / 198 lb and moved on the feet of a welterweight, guard deliberately low, torso taken out of range by footwork alone. No trainer was teaching that to a heavyweight in 1964. That is what the line is about.
What you see
Landscape format, deep black ground. The boxer holds the right half, framed from the waist up, lead arm fully extended at the end of a straight punch, dark glove, bare chested, light trunks with a wide waistband carrying the Everlast mark.
The left half is empty apart from the text, set in white capitals across two lines, with the attribution smaller below in yellow. From 3 m / 10 ft you read an extended arm and a block of text; from 1 m / 3 ft the shoulder muscles and the grain of the photograph appear.

Worth knowing: a text canvas is read, so put it where people stop — a corridor, a landing, the wall facing a sofa — rather than somewhere they pass quickly. Below 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in the attribution line gets hard to read beyond two metres. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Two lines of capitals and a large empty space
The left half of the canvas is almost bare black, and that emptiness is what gives the text its force — it does not survive being crowded. Plan a clear span: 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in over a two-seater, 100 × 150 cm / 39 × 59 in over a three-seater. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What does float like a butterfly, sting like a bee mean?
It describes a way of fighting: move constantly and out of range, then land without warning. The fuller version adds that the hands cannot hit what the eyes cannot see — a technical account of Ali moving like a welterweight at over 90 kg / 198 lb, with his guard held low.
Who wrote the butterfly and bee line?
From Drew Brown, known as Bundini, his cornerman, who coined it before the first Sonny Liston fight in February 1964. The fuller version the two of them chanted runs on: the hands cannot hit what the eyes cannot see. It is a technical description rather than a poetic one — Ali weighed over 90 kg / 198 lb and moved on the feet of a welterweight, guard deliberately low, torso out of range on footwork alone.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Is this canvas landscape?
Yes, landscape on all ten sizes, from 20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in to 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in, with the figure on the right and the text on the left.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
