The golden gloves of a Chicago newspaper
Before the world titles come the amateur tournaments. The Golden Gloves began in 1923 at the instigation of Arch Ward, a journalist at the Chicago Tribune, who set up an amateur competition open to every neighbourhood in the city. The format spread across the country.
Cassius Clay won six Kentucky Golden Gloves titles and then two national titles, before he ever left for Rome. Those fights were held in school gyms over three rounds in front of a few hundred people. Which is exactly what the text on this canvas says: a champion is not built in a gym, but out of what he carries in before he gets there.
What you see
Portrait format, plain black ground. The text fills the left two thirds: a title word in large capitals, then thirteen lines in smaller capitals, white, ranged left, with four passages in bold, and the signature Muhammad Ali at the foot.
On the right, Muhammad Ali in a guard, framed from the waist up, in black and white, with a single red glove as the only colour on the canvas. From 3 m / 10 ft you read the title word and a block of text; from 1 m / 3 ft the whole passage reads without effort.

Worth knowing: a thirteen-line text has to be read close up: allow 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in as a minimum to read it at two metres, and 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in if the canvas is seen from a sofa four metres away. It is the one piece in the family where the size depends on reading distance rather than on the furniture below. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Reading distance decides, not the furniture
Thirteen lines of capitals: the longest text in the collection. It reads at two metres from 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in, at four metres from 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in, and from across a room at 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
What does the quote on this canvas say?
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them — a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have the skill, and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. Thirteen lines of white capitals, signed Muhammad Ali.
What size keeps a long text readable?
Allow 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in to read the thirteen lines at two metres, 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in from a sofa four metres away, and 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in from across a room. Below 40 × 60 cm / 16 × 24 in only the title word reads.
What are the Golden Gloves?
An amateur tournament founded in 1923 by Arch Ward of the Chicago Tribune, open to every neighbourhood in the city and later copied nationwide. Cassius Clay won six Kentucky titles and two national ones before the Rome Olympics.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
