The most quoted Ali line may not be his
The line printed here circulates everywhere attributed to Muhammad Ali, along with a longer text opening on the idea that impossible is a big word thrown around by small men. The sources do not agree.
The text appeared publicly in February 2004, in a global advertising campaign in which Ali was one of the faces. According to an interview published by Advertising Age, the manifesto was written by the copywriter Aimee Lehto and the three-word line by her colleague Boyd Coyner, both at the agency behind the campaign. Other publications still credit the fighter with the whole thing. Nothing available today settles it. The line is inseparable from Ali; who actually wrote it remains disputed.
What you see
Portrait format, plain black ground. The words impossible is nothing fill the centre in white capitals across two lines, the last word set wider than the rest.
Behind and through the letters, the silhouette of a boxer in a guard appears in negative — and it is not drawn: it is made of small phrases in white capitals, repeated and turned every way, among which you can read is potential, it's a dare, it's an opinion, is not a fact, is temporary and is not a declaration. These are the segments of the long text the three words conclude.
No colour, no outline. From 3 m / 10 ft you read the three words; from 1 m / 3 ft the silhouette appears, and then the phrases it is built from.

Worth knowing: the canvas reads at two levels — three words from a distance, a whole text up close. It belongs where people stop: an office wall, a corridor, an entrance. From 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in the small phrases inside the silhouette become legible. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Three words from a distance, a whole text up close
The three words carry the canvas at five metres whatever the size. It is the phrases inside the silhouette that decide: they emerge from 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in and read one by one from 90 × 130 cm / 35 × 51 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
Is the impossible is nothing line really Muhammad Ali's?
It is disputed. The text surfaced in February 2004 in an advertising campaign; Advertising Age reported that the manifesto was written by copywriter Aimee Lehto and the three-word line by Boyd Coyner. Other sources still credit Ali entirely. Nothing available settles it.
Are there words inside the silhouette?
Yes: the silhouette is not drawn but built from small phrases in capitals — is potential, it's a dare, it's an opinion, is not a fact, is temporary, is not a declaration — the fragments of the long text the three words conclude. They become legible from 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
Can you see a boxer on this canvas?
Yes, in negative: a boxer in a guard takes shape behind and through the letters, formed by the density of the small white phrases. It is suggested at three metres and clear at one.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
