Where Ali learned to call himself the greatest
In 1961, in Las Vegas, Cassius Clay crossed paths with the wrestler Gorgeous George at a radio station where both were promoting that night's bill. On air, the wrestler promised to destroy his opponent and swore he would shave his head if he lost. That evening the hall was full — of people who had come to watch him fail.
Ali said afterwards that he understood that day that provocation filled halls as reliably as talent did. He took the method: round predictions, poems improvised at press conferences, and the line repeated until it became a title. The career backed it up: 56 wins in 61 fights, 37 inside the distance, and three heavyweight world titles, a first in the division.
What you see
Portrait format, very tight crop. A closed bare fist, held out towards the camera, fills the whole lower half of the image, sharp down to the creases in the knuckles. The face is behind it in the upper half, thrown out of focus by the shallow depth of field, looking straight ahead. Everything is in black and white.
A horizontal red band crosses the upper third, carrying be the greatest in white lower case that overruns the band. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a fist and a red bar; from 1 m / 3 ft the grain of the skin and the folds of the fingers appear.
