Rome 1960, a medal and a teenager
At the Rome Olympics in September 1960, an 18 year old American won the light heavyweight title. He was still called Cassius Clay and had just finished high school in Louisville. Team-mates said he never took the medal off: in the village, on the plane, in the street, he wore it round his neck.
That title opened the door to the professional ranks two months later and brought him the contract with the group of Louisville investors who funded his start. Thirty-six years later, in Atlanta, the International Olympic Committee gave him a replacement medal; the original had gone missing.
What you see
Portrait format. The boxer is painted from the knees up, mouth open, arms folded low across his body, red gloves, white trunks with a wide black waistband carrying the Everlast mark. The muscles are built from cold colour — blue, purple, turquoise — rather than from flesh tones.
The ground is painted deep blue on the left and green on the right, with magenta spatter around the torso. Two dark horizontal bands stand for the ring ropes. From 3 m / 10 ft you read a pale figure on a cold ground; from 1 m / 3 ft you see that the skin itself is blue.

Worth knowing: at 13 × 18 cm / 5 × 7 in this is one of the pieces that go smallest: the canvas sits on a shelf, a desk or inside an existing photo frame. Three or four small sizes hung together, 5 to 8 cm / 2 to 3 in apart, fill a wall as well as one large canvas. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes.
Twelve sizes, from a desk to a wall span
This is the fullest range in the Ali family: twelve dimensions, from 13 × 18 cm / 5 × 7 in on a shelf to 110 × 160 cm / 43 × 63 in holding a span on its own. The ring ropes and the lettering on the waistband become legible from 50 × 70 cm / 20 × 28 in. The size chart by wall type covers the other placements room by room.

Frequently asked questions
When did Muhammad Ali win his Olympic medal?
At Rome in September 1960, at 18, in the light heavyweight division, still under the name Cassius Clay. He turned professional two months later. The IOC replaced the lost medal in Atlanta in 1996.
What size canvas should I hang above a sofa?
The working rule is about two thirds of the width of the furniture below it, centred 145 cm / 57 in from the floor. Over a 200 cm / 79 in three-seater, that means 80 × 120 cm / 31 × 47 in; over a two-seater, 60 × 90 cm / 24 × 35 in; in a hallway, 30 × 45 cm / 12 × 18 in. The full size chart by wall type is on the Ali vs Liston 1965 page.
What is the smallest size available?
13 × 18 cm / 5 × 7 in, meant for a shelf, a desk or an existing photo frame rather than a wall. The next steps up are 15 × 20 cm / 6 × 8 in and 20 × 30 cm / 8 × 12 in, twelve sizes in all.
Why is the boxer's skin painted blue?
Because the whole canvas is built from cold colour: the muscles are modelled in blue, purple and turquoise rather than in flesh tones, so that the red gloves become the only warm point in the image.
Does the canvas come with a frame?
No, the canvas ships on its own, rolled in a protective tube. Frames are sold separately: wooden frame up to 100 cm / 39 in per side, XXL wooden frame from 110 to 200 cm / 43 to 79 in, or aluminium frame in 8 finishes. The wooden kits are 2.5 cm / 1 in thick and come with instructions.
How do I clean a canvas print?
A dry microfibre cloth handles almost everything. For a mark that stays, use a barely damp cloth with no detergent, wiping across the surface. No abrasive sponge, no glass cleaner.
